Movie Reviews of Gaza StripMovie Review: still a timely and compelling film Summary: 5 Stars
The material in this documentary was filmed in 2001 -- but it still feels like it could have been made yesterday. Unfortunately, the situation in the Gaza Strip has remained almost exactly the same for three years -- if anything it has just gotten worse. This film is quite strong, original and even brilliant in its portrayal. The narrative of the documentary flows in and out of the life of a 13-year-old newspaper boy in Gaza, making transitions into scenes from other parts of the Gaza Strip: A road blackade that has forced Palestinians onto the beach, an Israeli gas attack on Khan Yunis, house demolitions in the middle of the night, the death of a child and the seeds of young martyrdom. This is the most powerful documentary I have found on this subject, and it's important for anyone who wants to expand their view of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Movie Review: The most illuminating documentary Summary: 5 Stars
A documentary film this strong about the Middle East conflict -- and particularly about the Palestinians -- is bound to attract a lot of strident pro-Israeli-occupation critics. You can read their 1-star reviews posted here. You can read silly statements about Palestinian children throwing "deadly" rocks at Israeli tanks. You can read utter hogwash about Palestinian children spending their days tunneling to Egypt.Or you can get this film, and see Palestinian life in Gaza as it really is. This documentary is as close as it comes to showing the Palestinians in Gaza in a true light. Though it's not perfect, you will not find a better film about Palestinian life and death in Gaza. I have spent time in the Gaza Strip, and I can vouch for the accuracy of the portrayal in this film. Get it and show it to your friends.
Movie Review: Not Fox News ... Summary: 5 Stars
... And I for one am very thankful that this documentary takes the time to show some detail on the Palestinian side, rather than play this silly, false game of "fair and balanced". The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a fair or balanced conflict between equals -- it's a situation of brutal military occupation of Palestinian land by Israel that has gone on for the last 35 years in the case of the Gaza Strip and West Bank. So "bravo!" to a film that is finally courageous enough not to pretend that the Palestinians and Israelis are on an equal footing, or that good journalism means showing both sides as if they are the same. They aren't the same: One side is living under occupation, the other side is the occupier. The shame of it is that many Americans don't seem to know which is which.
Movie Review: The more things change ... Summary: 5 Stars
... the more they stay the same.
"Gaza Strip" was filmed in 2001. One of the last scenes in the film shows an Israeli raid on the Khan Younis refugee camp -- the dead and wounded being brought into the hospital and then, in the morning, the rubble of Palestinian homes left behind by Israeli tanks and bulldozers. Exactly the same story has happened again and again in the Gaza Strip -- most recently yesterday.
This film still holds the relevance to this conflict that it had when it was first released. The stories told, the pictures, the faces, the essential situation, is still the same now as it was 3 years ago. This documentary is still the best, virtually the only, full-length film out there that paints a true portrait of the Palestinians in Gaza. Everyone should see this film.
Movie Review: TO DEBUNK THE RADICAL FROM SANTA BARBARA Summary: 5 Stars
The reviewer from Santa Barbara who questions the authenticity of this documentary gives him or herself away with the complaint that no Jewish settlers were interviewed for the film. The reviewer from Santa Barbars states, factually, that "thousands of Jews live in Gaza"---to which I say *exactly!*, you fool, there are settlements on the best land (easiest access to water from acquifer) which house a few thousand Jews in luxury and are consuming a full 30% of a small parcel of land that is legally the property of the Palestinian state, which squeezes over a million into the other 70% of this small parcel.Apartheid is alive and well and in violation of UN resolutions and the 4th Geneva Convention in the occupied territories, and this film shows it how it is.
