Movie Reviews of Gaza StripMovie Review: my highest recommendation for this 5 Stars
i cannot think of a dvd i can higher recommend at this time than this. the conflict in occupied palestine is a horrible situation. the crimes that israel is getting away with is absolutely incredible, and the lack of information that is accurately being put out to the world is a huge contributing factor to the continuation of this disaster. i HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. why should machine gun fire be taking place outside of a school for no apparent reason. why should homes be bulldozed without advance warning to residents who are just barely able to get out alive. why should a wall be built to keep out palestinians. for too long the blame has been placed on terrorits for the justification of violence against children and others in this land. there is clearly an unfair advantage, and that is the military strength of israel against palestinians. this documentary is not the only info out there of truth but it sure shows the truth beyond a bias that is usually given. this is not a choppy put together film, there are many scenes caught where you can clearly see it wasnt staged, but everyday life for the unfortunate residents of this land. please view this immediately and then help to change the situation at hand.
Movie Review: outstanding film shows the human face of occupation Summary: 5 Stars
For those of you looking for a documentary that looks deeper than the news coverage of the Palestinians, this is the one to watch.
I first saw this in Boston as part of the Human Rights Watch traveling film fest and have since bought the DVD to show friends. It's important to know what goes on in the world. It's important to know how other people think, how they live, what they feel. And in terms of world peace today, nowhere is it more important to understand what is going on than in the Mid East, and specifically in the Palestinian/Israeli situation. This film is a big step in that direction.
The start of the film focuses on the dailylife of a paper boy in Gaza. In fact the film never bothers to do sit-down conversations with "important" people like politicians or officials. The whole film follows the lives of everyday ordinary people in Gaza, and it winds up being a portrait of the Palestinians who live there.
There is a gritty realism here. There is also, more surprisingly, a lot of real poetry in the images and the interviews. This is the poetry of life under pressure, under fire, a bitter-sweet bravery mixed up with blood and tears. I never expected a documentary film to move me as this one did.
Movie Review: more than a simple picture Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike the more recent HBO production about the same subject, "Death in Gaza," "Gaza Strip" doesn't lead viewers to believe that the main problem faced by Palestinian children is indoctrination against Israel. Instead, this film makes an unvarnished portrait of life under Israeli military occupation.
The main character here is also a 13-year-old boy who throws stones at the Israeli soldiers -- but he's driven by his own convictions rather than older militants. And the film notes that his father actively tries to prevent him from participating in the struggle -- even tying him up at home to keep him from throwing rocks.
And more than a simple picture of Palestinian life in Gaza, this film digs deep into the psychology of the subjects -- parts of the film are literally an internal dialogue taken from the interviews. We are left with a strong and moving picture of the human cost of Israel's military occupation. This is a deeply beautiful and daring film that refuses to play into the hands of Israeli anti-Palestinian propaganda. As U.S. citizens who finance the Israeli occupation with our tax dollars, we all need to understand what is taking place. Watch it and loan it to all your friends!
Movie Review: Watch the bitter truth - Thank you Mr. Longley Summary: 5 Stars
I would like to begin by thanking Mr.Longley for his efforts in making this much needed documentary. This documentary is hard to watch as the inhumane conditions that the Palestinians live in under the Israeli occupation are very distrubing and painful. It's about time an issue like this is being addressd in vivid detail and it's time for people to deeply think why when you criticize Israel in any way, you're automatically labeled as Anti-Semite..could it be so that we don't pursue the painful truth further? we live in a world where "Democracy" and "Antisemiticism" are words used for political purposes and to hide the truth. I still can't believe Israel gets away with all this and we Americans give a big chunk of our taxes to further prolong the occupation, build more settlements against international law in Palestinian lands and make the already complex situation in the occupied etrrtories even worse for these poor people. I stand ashamed and appauled at our ignorance to the outside world and our gullibility to the unbalanced and unfair news covering here in the U.S. Apparently censorship and biased news are embedded with us here at home and many don't realize it.
Movie Review: great document -- shows hidden reality Summary: 5 Stars
This film is unfortunately still up-to-date in many ways. As documented in this film, the Israeli military is still knocking down civilian homes in Gaza. Still shooting children armed only with rocks, if at all. Israel is still choking Palestinians with blockades inside their territory. Also, there are things in this film that weren't given much press in the West. Like Israel using convulsant gas on Palestinians in a refugee camp, for example. This incident is documented with a fair amount of detail and interviews with lots of people, including Doctors Without Borders. You won't have seen much about that in the New York Times, although the BBC reported it, briefly. More than being a down-to-earth document of all these things and more, though, this film is a string of personal narratives, almost stream-of-conciousness. The stories here are personal stories wrapped in larger events. This documentary is hard-hitting and real. This is good, even great documentary filmmaking with a compassionate and human touch. We need more films like this!
