Movie Reviews of Gargoyles

Movie Review: Early Stan Winston
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie used to be a staple on the UHF circuit and for good reasons. It's one of the first made-for-tv horror movies of the early 70's and it still stands up well almost thirty years later. Cornel Wilde makes the transition from the movie screen to the small screen without losing his presence. He is backed up by sexy Jennifer Salt who went on to star in SOAP and Scott Glen typecast as a biker. (Remember the biker movies he made with Gary Busey? Hex and The Shrieking.) The real star here is Stan Winston's costumes and there are many. Bernie Casey stands out underneath his makeup as the Garrgoyle leader. VCI has done an excellent job on the transfer, and all of these make this dvd an excellent purchase.

Movie Review: Not too terrible. A fair to decent late night movie.
Summary: 2 Stars

The 1972 movie Gargoyles was an interesting and fun film to watch when I was young. But, even then, I recall commenting on how fake the gargoyles looked...I know what you're thinking...what do you expect from 1972, right? Well, that's true, but that being said, the gargoyles clearly look ridiculous and it was just painfully obvious that some guy had on a gargoyle suit...perhaps, it would have been better if the viewer did not get such a close up. Some of the gargoyles looked ridiculous and I just love the jealous female gargoyle in the end. LOL.

Anyway, the plot is pretty sound. A father and his daughter go out west and hear stories about another form of life from an old fellow out in the middle of nowhere. When the old timer begins to tell them about the gargoyles, the old shack is destroyed and old fellow is killed. I thought this was probably the best scene in the movie and probably the only scene that was actually scary.

At any rate, the father and daughter move on in search of exactly what the old man was talking about and wondering what destroyed that shack and almost killed them. Eventually, they run into these gargoyles and kill one of them, but the young lady is ultimately kidnapped by the gargoyles and it is up to her father to save her and save the World from the gargoyles.

I had mixed feelings about this movie, but its a good movie to watch really late at night, but it's not scary, however, it is interesting and at times, this movie is funny albeit not on purpose. I just love the way that head gargoyle talked...I still laugh about that, but it's all good fun...still, it's difficult to call this a horror movie and yet this movie deserves a review nonetheless. In fact, this movie is actually pretty scary compared to most of the garbage supposedly called "horror movies" coming out today in theaters, but that aint sayin' much my fellow horror movie friends.

Movie Review: C R E E P Y ! (but flawed)
Summary: 2 Stars

Gargoyles was probably one of the creepiest movies of its era, and would probably be the best it could be except...the chase scene with the kids on motorcycles...watch the police car...it changes from Chevrolet to Ford then back again. When the film editor doesn't know the difference...that's when the mistakes occur.

Movie Review: Terrible make-up
Summary: 1 Stars

I am sorry but the monsters do not scary, they just look like B-Monsters from a B-Movie.
