Movie Reviews of Galaxy QuestMovie Review: Hilarious! Summary: 5 Stars
Having attended some of the conventions for old television series (Star Trek, Dark Shadows), I could really relate to this movie. The atmosphere and the attitude of the fans at some of these conventions are captured exactly by the director.
In this movie, the actors from on old television series very much like Star Trek, attend a convention. They are harangued by the fans and peppered with questions about the science in some of the more obscure episodes. Tim Allen is the William Shatner like character of the series and he meets some weird "fans" that ask him for help. Tim laughingly agrees. What he doesn't realize is that these are not fans but in actuality real aliens that think Allen is his persona in the TV series. On their planet they do not know what a lie or acting is so they accept Allen's "offer" of help and whisk him to a spaceship in another part of the solar system.
Allen then has to convince his co-stars to help the aliens and they agree not realizing what they are up against. They must battle an alien warlord who is ruthless as Star Trek's Khan.
There are some hilarious scenes in this movie that literally had me splitting my sides, especially with the actor who plays the ship's engineer (he is the same actor from the Monk tv series).
Much funnier and better conceived than Spaceballs!
Movie Review: Incredible visual effects, great movie overall Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is one of the most visual-effect spackled films since Star Wars-Episode 1. And that is pretty darn impressive. And the movie is great, Tim Allen really shines in this movie, and Daryl Mitchell and Sigourney Weaver are excellent counterparts. And this movie is....sort of funny...but it doesn't really live up to its comedy genre. If you want lots of laughs, this isn't quite the movie for you. But the DVD is excellent, it has fully interactive menus and two comedic features: 1. It has a Thermian language track (good for a laugh, but not if you don't want to hear everyone screeching) and 2. On the main menu, there is an "Omega 13" feature (as you know, the Omega 13 is a back-in-time-a-few-seconds-ago feature used in the movie), which is quite smart, because it can tell weather you've seen the ending or not, because if you activate it before then, it says on the screen: "Access Denied. You don't want to spoil the ending, do you?". And once you do see the ending, and try the Omega 13 feature again, it rewinds past the beginning clip of the menu, and the menu activates again. Funny! So in short, if you want to see a dazzling movie, see Galaxy Quest. But if Comedy's your priority, don't. And if you love a well-designed DVD, get Galaxy Quest on DVD.
Movie Review: Hilarious Parody of Sci-Fi TV Summary: 5 Stars
Galaxy Quest is a charming and good-hearted parody of the oldsci-fi television shows we know and love, particulary the original"Star Trek." Tim Allen plays the bombastic, Shatneresque lead star of an old Sci-Fi series ("Galaxy Quest") that has developed a cult following. Allen and the rest of the crew haven't had a decent part since the series faded 18 years ago, and subsist by making paid appearances at Trekkie-like fan conventions. Life goes on, until one day... Plenty of laughs and sci-fi in-jokes abound as Allen and his castmates stumble through their alien adventures... Allen is more than adequate as the posturing star who suddenly has to become a real hero, and Sigourney Weaver is terrific as a bosomy blond crew-mate who always leads with her "best pair." Alan Rickman plays the Spock-like "Dr. Lazarus" with hilarious disdain. The real stars, however, are the naive, hero-worshipping aliens -- the way they talk and walk is both hilarious and heart-breaking. I can't imagine anyone not liking this film; there's enough here to entertain even people who don't normally like sci-fi films or TV shows. The DVD "extras" include out-takes and dialogue translated into "Thermian" (the aliens' helium-like language.)
Movie Review: The galaxys first Thermian-dubbed DVD! Summary: 5 Stars
[This review is for the DVD version] I'll agree with and double every praise other reviewers have given this movie--a fun and funny family movie with great special effects, wonderfully acted (sometimes hilariously hammy acting!), with a double appeal not only to people who like fantasy adventure but also to the huge "Star Trek" fandom who'll see the only-slightly distorted versions of Shatner, Nimoy, Nicholls, Doohan etc., in an adventure we only *wish* they could have had! But I also have to give much praise and thanks to the developers and designers of the DVD version of this film for its incredibly fun extras: a healthy selection of deleted scenes, a silly but fun "Omega 13" menu option, but best of all, once you've watched the whole film in English, you can go back, choose the language option, and watch the entire movie dubbed in Thermian...the movie's fictional alien language that sounds like something between a whale call and Andy Kaufman. Pointless? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely! For this goofy option alone this deserves to get an award for innovative DVD of the year...and shows that deep down, the moviemakers had a heckauva lot of fun creating this movie and DVD...almost as much as we do watching it over and over again.
Movie Review: Cancelled But Still Going Summary: 5 Stars
What happens when the only good part of your acting career was a show that was cancelled many years before? Well, if it was a science fiction show, you can relive your character at science fiction conventions. That is what has happened to the cast of Galaxy Quest and they are not particularly happy about it. Then they get a second chance.
Aliens far out in space have intercepted Earth's television signals. As they have no concept of fiction, they believe the shows are reality. They have decided to base their society on that seen in Galaxy Quest. They are peaceful but at war with another species that is anything but. They think their only hope is the crew from Galaxy Quest. They have seen them defeat evil on countless occasions. They have now come to Earth to enlist the crew.
The cast finds themselves in a real life and death struggle deep in space. While they know they are only actors, they get talked into helping. Plot complications, humor, and plenty of action keep the ball rolling right to the end. What could easily have been a movie based on one bad joke is really so much more. Science fiction fans will get a lot of in jokes and cliches but non-fans can also enjoy the movie fully. A truly fun film.
