Movie Reviews of G3 - Live in DenverMovie Review: Whoever says Malmsteen sucks can eat shit Summary: 5 Stars
The 2003 G3 tour...with the usual tag team of Satriani and Vai rounding out this year with none other than Yngwie Malmsteen. Malmsteen's popularity has severly dwindled since the dawn of the 90's, but somehow the man contiues to still makes records. While most of his releases offer nothing (musically) new, he is still an extremely gifted guitarist. His first three records in the 80's with Rising Force are probably his best 3, with Fire and Ice (92), and Facing the Animal (98) rounding out the Top 5. I've seen Yngwie twice live (before this G3 tour) and I must say I've never seen anyone play the guitar more viciously and furiously as he does. He must go through about 150 guitar picks per show. Everyone who says Malmsteen sucks here and raves about Vai and Satch need to know something about guitar playing. Any real guitarist (which I myself do not even play guitar) will tell you Malmsteen on this tour was the only one of the (G)3 playing a real guitar. You try playing a Fender Strat at his speed and not have that guitar go out of tune on you!. I'm not saying Vai and Satch are not great guitarist, because they both are also, but they play those silly Ibanez guitars that never blow out no matter how much they bend the strings. And speaking of Vai, is it me or does his guitar tone sound like it's got no balls? I mean, this dude has a crappy amp set up. So, if you put a Fender Strat in each of these guitarist hands and let it rip, you'll see them switch their guitar's about 4 times each during a song!!! I've seen Yngwie live and he does it all night long. So to wrap up my review, this is an awesome DVD, and the jam at the end is great, (actually worth the price alone!), just don't listen to all these other Amazon-knuckleheads who say Yngwie blows or ruins this DVD, cause anyone who could play guitar like him, I'd like to hear that!
Movie Review: The best Summary: 5 Stars
This is a major improvement over the other DVD.I went to one of these concerts at the Warner Theatre in DC,and it was an amazing show. Now I can relive the show whenever I want to.Here is my review of each song here: Joe: Satch Boogie-One of my favorite Satch songs played in fine form.Nothing else I can really say. The Extremist-Great song.Lots of fast licks and a cool harmonica solo. Starry Night-A new one off the Strange Beautiful Music album. When I went to this show, this was the first time I heard this song. It's a cool ballad, nothing else I can really say. Midnight-Cool song.It is really just a minute of three finger tapping licks.I was REALLY surprised to hear this one when I saw them live. The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing-Great closer featuring some RIPPIN' guitar solos. Steve: I know You're Here-Cool song written exclusively for the tour.He plays this one on a triple-neck guitar Juice-Cool song.Very similar to Joe's "Satch Boogie",but not as good. I'm The Hell Out Of Here-AWESOME song that features a part where Steve,Tony,Billy, and Dave fret each others instruments. This was my favorite Vai song when I saw them live. Yngwie: Evil Eye-GREAT song to open a show.Features a really cool duel with keyboardist Joakim Svalberg. Baroque and Roll-A new one of the Attack album.Cool song, nothing else I can say. Acoustic Guitar Solo-A REALLY good solo played on an acoustic guitar.Nothing else I can say. Adagio-An intro to "Far Beyond The Sun".Nothing that special. Far Beyond The Sun-The BEST song on the DVD.I like it better here than when I saw them.At the end,he rips the strings off the guitar. He then smashes it and then throws it into the audience.
Movie Review: Better than the other G3 tours i've seen! Summary: 5 Stars
I been to many other concerts to see these guys but this is probably the best I've seen so far!(on DVD that is)
The song selection is great, Satches plays awesome beat songs such as his SATCH BOOGIE hit, an acoustic sounding symphony with just his fingers, and songs that are so well put together. The stage performance is pretty good, in satches case. His bassest and second guitarist don't really go too much into the groove of the songs, thats the only bad part about the Satch play.
Steve Vai just has to go on stylish every concert doesn't he? He starts out playing a song with his three necked guitar, plus he actually got a little better at singing. The other songs his band (Sheehan, Weiner, Macapline, etc.) went well with cooperating and it's great at one part seeing them hold on to eachothers guitar necks and playing them. There isn' anything wrong with them playing that I saw.
Yngvay Malmsteen's live part is pretty good, especially when he goes to the classic guitar and plays portuguese/spanish mixed music. But the only thing I don't like is that most of his songs he plays SOUND like he's speed metalling through the whole way. (P.S. you know what you don't see now a days? a guitarist smashing his guitar, he does this.)
When all three play at the end with "rockin in the free world" and two Jimi Hendrix tunes it turns out better when all three play. Though the only bad things are Joe's band still not going into too much groove for the songs, and yngvay malmsteen goes a little crazy seperate on the other two guitarists. Still pretty cool, he plays with his teeth.
The whole DVD is definitly worth the buy, The cons of this DVD don't really matter at all actually, because the performance is fantastic.
Movie Review: Yngwie spoils the whole thing Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best G3s. Maybe even the best. I would have said that it was definitely the best if not for Mr.Malmsteen - the nicest thing one can say about the latter is that he knows his minor and major scales.
But *I* don't want to be nice. I want to be absolutely and unequivocally cruel when it comes to Malmsteen.
He knows alternate picking, I'll give him that. But then, so do I - and a million others. He shouldn't be up there playing with Vai and Satriani solely because he can alternate pick faster than most (not all) people . And yet he is.
He shows over and over again, in this show, that the only thing he can do with the guitar is shred and shred and shred some more. That's all. One of the interesting things about this DVD is that one cannot really measure the time between two consecutive shredding runs that Yngwie chooses to execute - it's less than about a second. And this is an *average* figure.
Enough about Yngwie, though he is the reason I'm writing this review - Satriani is absolutely amazing, as usual, with a brand new rendition of 'Midnight' and a nice solo at the end of 'Starry Night'.
Vai, though, steals the show. This coming from a guy who prefers Satriani. But I can't help it - he is really that good. And better. 'I Know You're Here'(which he plays on a triple neck Jem) contains at least seven new approaches to the same old things that you're taught at guitar school. It is also the best song Steve Vai has ever written after 'Fire Garden Suite'.
'Juice' and 'I'm the Hell Outta Here' are also really really really good.
Overall, a great DVD, though you should probably skip the parts with Yngwie in it.
Movie Review: Awesome Show!! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw these 3 together at the House of Blues in Orlando...awesome is an understatement. If this DVD doesn't sound good or you don't like the song selection, either your entertainment system sucks or you don't know anything about guitar!! I have listened to Vai and Satriani since the 80's and was totally blown away when they began touring together...however many years ago it was. Ordinarily, Malmsteen, I could take or leave. Even when I saw them live, I felt he was out-classed, but still put on a great show. I recently bought 'Vai: Live At The Astoria' and pleased to see a different song selection on both the DVD and CD sets. The G3 Jam songs, leave me with my mouth open every time I listen. By far, 'Rockin' In The Free World' is their best jam together, with 'Voodoo Child' a distant second. I didn't care a lot for 'Little Wing', but I'm not a fan of slow tunes or much of Hendrix's stuff. Coupled with the audio CD, 'Rockin' In The Free World', you'll be doing alright!! The sets have some different songs on them, plus the DVD has a tune from Yngwie's latest CD called 'Baroque And Roll' that is real cool. If you have a chance to actually go to live show, you MUST go...Satriani is pure talent, Vai the showman and Malmsteen adds a touch of classical style guitar that brings it around full circle. Buy it!!
