Movie Reviews of G3 - Live in Denver

Movie Review: Whatever
Summary: 5 Stars

Listen up 'Dr Toner' or whatever your silly little name is, you need some educating.
First of all I want to say that Ibanez guitars are not silly as you put it, I own one and it is awesome, you might also notice if you have eyes that they have Floyd rose whammy bars on vai and satch models, so they actually have MORE!! Chance of going out of tune as the setup is more complicated than fenders. So don't spout you mouth of about things you don't know about. Ibanez's are REAL guitars, not these fender things with simple setups. Also... yngwie uses a scalloped neck which also makes it easier to play... so if anything yngwie has a simpler gutiar to play than vai or satch. So once again your simple minded prejudice is proved wrong.

I noticed also that you say that you don't play guitar.... well pick on up and learn something buddy.... and shut that big fat sh*t talking mouth of yours... you'll soon see how talented vai and satch are with their control and emotion ... yngwie is a great guitarist don't get me wrong but his stuff can often get tuneless and repetitive!!

I would also like to let you know that Vai played a fender with Zappa and on his first release so there!!! He is so good he could play any guitar, any time anywhere... so what's a talent less loser like you doing criticizing his setup. Carvin and Peavey amps are awesome and the tone is richer than any stupid violin slushy tone that yngwie pumps out... No balls in a violin sound is there?? Hehe ... his tone is awful on this DVD and my sound engineer agrees with me and he's toured with whitesnake, magnum, Iron Maiden and Deep Purple. So they actually know what they are talking about ... Dr Toner dude... I hope your feeling embarrassed if you're reading this because you are so out of order it's funny! Vais and satch's tones are warm and smooth and have feeling so..... Once again ... this Dr 'I haven't got a clue' toner is proved wrong.

Also... yngwie goes thorough picks because he likes the crowd to have a memento, not because of his playing... check out his interviews for proof of this... I have one of yngwies pick that he gave me at one of his guitar clinics and after playing guitar with it personally ... I can say that there's no way you can go through one of them in a night. So once again ... you are wrong DR EXPERT toner man!!!

Next.... we move onto another of your stupid statements ... Steve and Joe would have to change their guitars 4 times in one song if they used fenders... haha... if you actually watched these guitarist... 'I know is difficult when your head is up your own a** like yours' but you would notice that Vai and Satch hardly ever change their guitars during a concert, they use mostly the same guitars all night ...now then.... yngwie actually changes his after every song.... so there u go.. Are you a blind idiot as well as deaf !!!!???

Advice from me is......
Don't listen to this 'Dr Tone' less' knucklehead... he would know a guitar tone if it slapped him in the face... he doesn't even play guitar remember so how does he know what music is. There we go... another 'stupid wannabe expert' is shut up!! Pheeeww.... thank god!

Anyway ... the DVD is awesome, if you love virtuoso guitar playing do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Movie Review: Awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

Well since im a guitar player i decided that this would be something to pick up and watch, just to see what they were capable of. Wow all of these guys are absolutely incredible, I've never seen such talented players before. The closest ive seen is my guitar teacher, but i don't know if he is as good as they are yet.Ok, the only person i have heard a lil bit from is yngwie, so when i saw Satch playing i was blown away. I dont care if he doesnt play a million notes a second, but he puts soo much feeling into it i almost started to cry lol. I have never seen any one so comfortable on stage he just walks around, kinda bounces around a lil and just.... well just plays. He is my new favorite guitarist. Steve Vai came out, and first off i have seen pics of this guy and heard about his fashion line or whatever,so i was expecting well a fruitcake to be honest lol, but he is an excellent player. He hits a few bad notes, and some of his style is kinda strange. But there is one thing i wasn't happy about with Mr.Vai, he played to the camera and not the crowd. And if u don't connect to the crowd, its not very interesting. There is one thing he is definetely better at than the other 2 and that is his singing abilities, i was surprised at how good he was.Ok Yngwie definetely made the best entrance lol. It was pretty cool and it got the crowd pumped up alot. But i had never seen him before, and he scared the crap out of me lol. Jk, but he looks like something out of the medieval times, but he is definetely an excellent player. This guy could probably hit like 1,000 notes a second, well i don't know if hes that good but you get the idea.I like his style, its real hard hitting, and his guitar has an awesome searing tone to it. Yngwie is probably the showiest out of the 3, he runs around, does some one hand stuff, throws his guitar in the air, spins his guitar around his body, then finally at the end he destroys it and throws it to some lucky guy in the crowd lol. The best part of the whole dvd has to be the jam, now the first song "Rockin' in the Free World" isnt one of my favorites but they rocked like crazy on it. Now "Little Wing" is probably one of my favorites by Hendrix, once again Steve Vai delivers some amazing vocals on it which really added to the song, then the first part of the solo just gives me chill bumps, cause the whole song is kinda laid back, then bam this awesome heartfelt solo, yngwie does the first part, then steve vai comes in tappin and it sounds awesome, then Satch comes in with the best soundin out of the 3, he put soooooo much feelin in it, and he knows he's good so he doesnt have to blaze through everything, and i love how they all play the original solo together, then they go an octave higher. And then the last song is Voodoo Child which is another of my Hendrix favs. ok Yngwie needs to give up signing lol, i couldnt understand half the words he said. But the solos where good and they ended a great show with a great song. Hopefully G3 will come somewhere close to me like Birmingham, or Atlanta or something cause i would love to see it!!!!!!

Movie Review: Whoever came up with G3 is a genius!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know where to start. This DVD is awesome!!!!!! I bought the old G3 concert on DVD and that was awesome, but it was nothing compared to this masterpiece. It's a very well made DVD. The sounds are all well mixed and the camera angles are good. I'll review each song. That way those that don't know the setlist can see it.
Joe:
Satch Boogie - great version of it, a little slower than the live in S.F. version, but it sounds great.
The Extremist - awesome version, harmonica solo sounds good as does the solo
Starry Night - glad he played this, it's from his latest album, nice slow song with some great guitar playing in it
Midnight - very cool to hear it, even cooler to see it played
The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing - this song is always awesome live, sounds very good.
Steve:
I Know You're Here - Wow, awesome intro with a very cool guitar, you'll see what i mean, then it goes into a song with some vocals and then solos, great
Juice - awesome solos, awesome riff, awesome song
I'm the Hell Outta Here - WOW! the whole band gets into this one, I love this song and am really sad that it's not on the CD version, just watch it the whole way through and I promise afterwards you'll be screaming, "WHOA, THAT WAS AWESOME!!!"
Yngwie, definitely a great addition this time, and i don't care what anyone else says, Yngwie f***in' rules!!!:
Evil Eye - fast flying fingers and cool solos between guitar and keyboard
Baroque and Roll - very cool sounding intro and great fast solos
Acoustic Guitar Solo - fast and intense on acoustic, it's, for lack of better words, awesome
Adagio - good sound to it
Far Beyond the Sun - this song has always been awesome, great intro riff and some fierce solos, and then he finishes up the song very brutally (you'll see what i mean)
While these performances are already amazing, now they all come out together!!!!!!
G3:
Rockin' in the Free World - SWEET!!! I've been waiting to see someone besides Pearl Jam to cover this. starts off with some cool feedback, then the powerful, driving drums come in as Steve and Yngwie play some harmony, then the song starts, Joe sings lead vocals, awesome solo session between them all, Yngwie gets a little greedy on one part (just watch Steve) it's funny, then there's a great harmony spot with all of them, then it's excellent from there out
Little Wing - starts off slow and soft with Steve singing, then they do the solo thing and all play together and it sounds GLORIOUS!!!

Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Oh Hell yeah!!!! Yngwie starts it off and sings! i didn't know he could sing, well actually, it's a good thing there aren't tons of lyrics, hehe, the solos are great and that's all there is to say
That's that. This DVD is so awesome. Seriously this is so much better than the old DVD. I love it so much. If you like any of these guys, this DVD is totally worth buying. It's one of the best concerts ever!!! Buy it now, or i promise you'll be sorry. G3 RULZ!!!!!!!

Movie Review: Much better than the first G3 video.
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't like the first G3 video too much (no disrespect to Eric Johnson), so I wasn't expecting much from this one. Well, after popping this one into my DVD player, I was riveted from start to finish. This was a great show! First, I'm really a Satriani fan more than a Vai or Malmsteen fan, and Satriani's tone is much better in my opinion on this DVD than on the first G3 or Live in San Francisco. Satriani is using his new Peavey amps and his live tone actually sounds good now. You can tell it from his playing, too -- he is obviously more inspired when playing. I liked this G3 better than the first and the Live in San Francisco simply because of Satriani's improved tone. Vai plays only 3 songs and he makes some really goofy faces when he plays. Anyways, he sounds good and the part where he, Tony Macalpine, Billy Sheehan, and Dave Weiner fret each others guitars and play a harmony line is very entertaining. Yngwie plays the same diminished and minor sweep arpeggios, harmonic minor scale runs, and classical licks that he's played for years, but you won't be able to take your eyes off of him because he's just so funny -- he's fat and wears leather pants, has an 80's hairstyle, and swings his guitar around every 2 minutes. I liked the jams on this DVD much better than the first, too. Rockin' in the Free World is a great song -- I'll bet Neil Young never expected to hear Yngwie playing his neoclassical shredder soloing on this song. Vai sings Little Wing, and he is a better singer than Satriani or Malmsteen. Malmsteen slurs the lyrics to Voodoo Chile -- was he drunk?! Sometimes, Malmsteen throws his guitar into the air a lot (instead of actually playing it) -- while Joe and Steve play -- Malmsteen's so funny! The extras suck on this DVD. I mean you get a lighting plot What is up with that?!!!!!!!!!?????!!!????? A lighting plot diagram?!!!?!!!?!!!? WHO CARES?!!?!!!?!!?!!? Is that some kind of joke?!!?!!?!!?!??!??! I still like this DVD, though. Satch finally has a good live tone, Vai plays well, Malmsteen is a real hoot, and the jams are way better this time around. I was thoroughly entertained by this DVD and it is well worth the $12.

Movie Review: Speed Kills? Not at this concert!
Summary: 5 Stars

I grew up on early British Blues, and have always loved to see the most innovative and skilled guitarists. Though concert wary, I have nonetheless been able to see Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, SRV, Steve Morse, Albert King, B.B. King, Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana, Les Claypool (OK, he's a bass player), John Petrucci, and many other masters of the guitar. I went to this concert at the Fillmore in Denver, and it was a real epiphany.

While there's a critic in every crowd, here's the bottom line: this was the runner-up for the most talent I have seen play TOGETHER at one event. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck (with Terry Bozzio on drums) takes first from 1989. The G3 fellows were flawless. Truly spectacular. Comparisons of Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen are difficult because they each are brilliant in different and diverse ways, and really what's the point? I hadn't kept up on Yngwie for more than a decade, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But he was just phenomenal. And he really added a different voicing to the jams at the end of the concert. I don't even like Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World", but these three made it work.

So, is the DVD a good representation of the live concert? Absolutely. Not one song was edited out (though Vai's playing with his tongue during the jam was not shown). Malmsteen's set was put in a different order ("Far Beyond the Sun" was not his finale, look at the start of "Adagio" to see him inspecting his cut finger from ripping off the strings during the guitar smashing which happened earlier in the concert). "Adagio" was his encore.

Now I have to check the box that says "I am over the age of 13". Yes, by 44 years. My college students have me listening to DragonForce and other modern "guitar gods". Hmmmm? Speed kills? Yes! Except in the hands of the most experienced drivers. Take a ride with Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen and get a new perspective.
