Movie Reviews of Full Metal JacketMovie Review: possibly the best NAM movie ever! Summary: 5 Stars
Could be the best nam movie ever. The other two contenders are Apocalypse Now and Platoon. I cant decide which are the best of the three. THey are the Holy Trinity of Nam films. I have not seen the Deer Hunter yet so dont kill me. This movie amazes me. The first half boot camp sequence is soo reall. The drill sargeant in this movie is amazing, his opening speech to his troops is one of the best scenes in movie history. Vincent Donofrio stood out in this portion of the film. I dont see why people complain about the 2nd half. I thought i equalled the first. THe 2nd half details what Private Joker goes through in Nam. Matthew Modines performance was smart in this section. I loved the dialouges in the 2nd half, when the general explains that "within every gook is an American trying to get out" is classic. lots of other ironic and humourous dialouges. This movie succeeds in both halfs contrary to what many reviews say. Kubricks use of music like in all his movies is unmatched. U need to see this movie, and then buy it. It is a truly underatted classic.
Movie Review: "This is my bro, This is his Party, he's the guest of Honor" Summary: 5 Stars
" Today ... is his birthday...I will never forget this day. The day I came
to Hue City and fought one million N.V.A. gooks. I love the little Commie bastards, man, I really do. These enemy grunts are as hard as slant-eyed drill instructors. These are great days we're living, bros!'We are jolly
green giants, walking the earth with guns. These people we wasted here today ... are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world, we're gonna miss not having anyone around that's worth
shooting."
One of the coldest movie dialogs, i've heard in this movie. It pretty much gave an example of what exactly the whole "Killer grunt" mode was all about in Vietnam. Instead of cheesy, corny dialog... this was as real as it could get.
This film's a masterpiece and the memorable characters being the 'lovable' Drill Instructor Hartman ... "You pukes will sleep with your rifles! You will give your rifle a girl's name! Because this is the only pu#@y you people are going to get! "
Movie Review: Troubled by full frame? Summary: 5 Stars
I am writing to clear up some of the uproar surrounding the 1:1.33 full frame versions of Full Metal Jacket and The Shining being released as part of the Stanley Kubrick Collection. Before his death, Kubrick personally oversaw the creation of these DVDs; every detail down to the typefaces used on the packaging was Kubricks choice (Research has led me to believe this is true, though I cannot confirm it in any way). Due to the advent of the VCR and Kubricks disdain for Pan&Scan, The Shining (and later FMJ) were actually filmed "Full Frame" by Kubrick, and later matted for theatrical release to avoid Pan & Scan butchery by the movie studios. That is why these two DVDs are Full Frame. We will see the films as Kubric intended them. True, I prefer the shape of widescreen; it is more "stable" and pleasant, compared to 1:1.33, but I'd rather follw the masters orders...
Movie Review: 1:33:1 is how Kubrick intended it Summary: 5 Stars
It was released in the UK in 1:33:1 (actually, i think it was 1:66:1, but i'm working on little to no sleep and my memories of nerding out on Kubrick while at university). Being the anal-retentive guy he is, he oversaw the mastering of the DVDs up to and including the package design, so i think he wants it the way it is. What are we missing by the movie not being "widescreen"? It's not a Cinemascope Western, _Lawrence of Arabia_, or _2001_ where there are multitudes of great expanses. _FMJ_ is claustrophobic - the screen-filling 1:33:1 will be really in-your-face. Anyway, _Strangelove_ and _Clockwork_ aren't 1:85:1 and so was almost every movie until the suits at the studios decided they needed to compete with TV. So the love of money created widescreen so you can be able to see _Grease_ in C'Scope at your reporatory cinema, that's something to be thankful for.
Movie Review: Way better than Platoon Summary: 5 Stars
If your a Kubrick fan you already know that he made the best movies. Every one of his movies are among the best of their specific genre. Full Metal Jacket is no exception. The great Vietnam movie is always said to be Platoon. It won the Oscar, and it is a good movie. But, Full Metal Jacket blows it away. Completely. It's a more believeable movie for one. Second, much like another great war movie, All Quiet on the Western Front, it takes us on a journey with these young solders. We see them as kids, and then as full-fledged killers. The story arch is quite incredible. And it doesn't have some dumb Hollywood ending like Platoon had. The horrors of Vietnam are fully realized, and it didn't take a 1000 special effects to do it. Solid acting, and a great script was all it took. Oliver Stone, give your Oscar to Kubrick, he outdid you bigtime.
