Movie Reviews of Full Metal Jacket [HD DVD]

Movie Review: Best Vietnam war movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched this movie several times, but the HD DVD version was the best. It is a nice clean transfer in the original aspect ratio (the DVD release was cropped to 4:3 and highly compressed). This is the definitive Vietnam war movie-great cast, dialogue, and editing. I forgot that Adam Baldwin was in it (he also played my favorite character Jayne in Firefly and Serenity). His role felt like an early prototype for Jayne. And R Lee Armey was just fantastic. This movie is not for the faint of heart, but I highly recommend it.

Movie Review: I hope they're just kidding, I ain't ready for this--
Summary: 4 Stars

Before Full Metal Jacket was released on HD DVD, I refused to watch it because for some reason Stanley Kubrick's intentions were to distribute it in Full Screen rather than the way it was filmed in Widescreen on DVD. Now that the HD DVD version is released and in Widescreen I finally got a chance to see the film, and I'll tell you my thoughts.

This is one of the most realistic war movies I've ever seen. It's about 2 hours long in length but it feels like an hour. It shows how kids were broken down and built back up into killing machines. Some of the things they say can be disturbing when describing their rifle. The movie will often shock you, make you laugh, and depress you. Lee Ermey will blow you away with his role as Gunny Hartman the drill sargent.

Visually, this is a so-so picture. While most of the film has a decent clarity, there is also an undeniable amount of grain during parts of the film. This isn't because it's an HD DVD, it's also the same case with the Blu-Ray version. HD DVD's have an incredible reputation with visual clarity, Blu-Ray on the other hand... well, I suppose this title fits in perfectly with other Blu-Ray movies when it comes to visual clarity. Warner Brothers could have done more than they did, perhaps in the distant future it'll be revisited. However, since the film is so good and absorbing and finally seeing it in Widescreen with some high definition at all makes it an incredible experience.

Overall, if you're just getting an HD DVD player all I can say is that there's many other titles that have a groundbreaking showcase of high definition BUT if you want a movie that's truly a classic and will blow you away with the lack of real visual clarity at times, this movie is it.

Movie Review: 5 star movie - 1star presentation
Summary: 3 Stars

I Recently purchased the toshiba HD-DVD player and this movie along with Phantom of the Opera. The Quality of this HD DVD was a real disappointment. Phantom looked great and FMJ not so good. Part of this reason is that older films usually never look as good (older film stock, degredation etc.) however, I did comparisions with the DVD release and the HD DVD only looked marginally better. The HD DVD is in the HD widescreen format while the DVD is 4:3.

This does not mean that the widesceen version has more of the picture. In fact the opposite is true. The 4:3 DVD version shows the entire film negative while the Widescreen is cropped at the top and bottom. The effect is similar to zooming in the picture on a widescreen TV from 4:3 to zoom 1. When doing this with the DVD version the improvement of the HD DVD was obvious (as one would expect when zooming any picture) but apart from this (and slightly better sound quailty than the DVD) there is no reason to purchase this if you own the DVD.

As for the film itself, it is a masterpiece that stands up over time. The combat scenes showing the confusion of urban fighting are extremely well executed.

Movie Review: HD-DVD only review
Summary: 3 Stars

After seeing what the new technology can do to the visual quality of another Vietnam film 30+ years old (The Deer Hunter), I was disappointed in how this presentation of FMJ looked in hi-def. It almost looks like the SD (standard def) disc was "dubbed" and simply relabeled "HD"; much of the first half of the film looks over-exposed & washed out, esp. scenes in the barracks. In addition there is NOTHING extra included in the HD disc vs. the disc! No commentaries, no deleted scenes, nothing! As large & diverse as this ensemble cast was, surely Warner Brothers could have found at least ONE of the actors to provide some much-needed insight on how this film was made & the feelings of the cast on-set.

I hope the "deluxe" HD-DVD package brings more to the table than this one...it wouldn't be difficult at all.

Movie Review: HD DVD is a new format.
Summary: 3 Stars

This isn't actually a review of the movie, this is just a response to another person's review. He was having problems with the disc, but it is not the disc's fault, nor is it an overuse of copyrigt protection. This is an HD-DVD, a completely new format put out by Toshiba to compete with Sony's Blu-Ray. It uses a completely different laser, code, and encryption than original DVDs. It WILL NOT work in current DVD players, you must purchase a new player that can read these discs. An expansion for the XBox 360 will be put out later so that it will read HD DVDs, but that will not be released until later. As with the Blu-Ray technology, the players will probably pretty expensive, so if you want to watch this on an HD DVD, be prepared to fork over some big bucks.
