Movie Reviews of From Here to EternityMovie Review: Essential Cinema Summary: 5 Stars
Though sanitized for Hays Office protection, director Fred Zinnemann and screenwriter Daniel Taradash bring out the best in James Jones' pre-World War II novel. Nearly 60 years later, "From Here to Eternity" (1953) endures as a landmark drama. The entire cast is memorable, yet Montgomery Clift's brilliant performance stands out. Among the film's numerous awards, Burnett Guffey earned an Oscar for his atmospheric cinematography. A genuine screen classic.
Movie Review: From Here to Eternity Summary: 5 Stars
"Eternity" virtually swept the 1953 Oscars, and no wonder. It's a multi-layered human drama set within the larger canvas of World War II. The all-star cast is uniformly excellent. Indeed, Sinatra's Oscar-winning turn as Maggio single-handedly revived his sagging career. And the torrid (for the time) beach scene with Lancaster and Kerr remains one of cinema's most indelible images. Watch for that culminating Pearl Harbor attack sequence.
Movie Review: The DVD is in the proper aspect ratio Summary: 5 Stars
Contrary to what jholden says, the DVD displays the film in its proper aspect ratio. The film was not originally released in widescreen, but in fullscreen. A widescreen version of this film would have to chop off the top of the fullscreen image. From Here to Eternity is a wonderful film, as is getting a proper release on dvd with a good amount of extras, and good presentation on top of that. And who can complain about that?
Movie Review: The "fantasy" of every red-blooded American male Summary: 5 Stars
Yeah, the story is great, and the acting is top-notch from all the principal characters. But, let's be honest, the most memorable element of the film is the "romp" on the beach between stars Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. Like Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" made many-a-hotel customer cautious in the shower, "Eternity" made "making out on the beach" an alluring possibility.
Movie Review: From Here to Eternity Summary: 5 Stars
Others will give a better low down on the story, cast, quality, etc...but outside of the drama and romance, this comes very close to garrison life in the US (brown shoe) Army during peace time. My favorite scene is where DiMaggio crowns Fatso with a chair in the New Congress Club. Not to say this is the only action, just my favorite part. This movie would lose some effect if it were in color.
