Movie Reviews of Friendly PersuasionMovie Review: What a SUPER film! Summary: 5 Stars
Man, this is just about as good as they get. It is a very long movie, but it is well worth your time. There's good acting and a terrific story full of humor and real live situations that people encounter. OK, we might not have them happen exactly like this, but they are things we have to face regularly: our patriotism, loyalty, religious beliefs, and our love for family. There are also some very funny situations that arise throughout the movie.
One can definitely watch this movie and laugh and learn--especially with their family!!
Movie Review: Timeless Gary Cooper! Summary: 5 Stars
Gary Cooper played some of his best acting performances in the '50s. "Friendly Persuasion" is one. His co-stars were impressive as well, especially Dorothy McGuire. Don't be turned-off because it's Family-friendly. There is comedy and drama surrounding the story of a Quaker Farmer and his Family having to confront the American Civil War literally brought to thier doorstep in Pennsylvania. Pat Boone had a tremendously popular hit with the title song too. William Wyler directed many wonderful movies and "Friendly Persuasion" stands out. Don't miss it!
Movie Review: A sense of humor as well as a conscience Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best late Gary Cooper movies even though the story really centers on the struggles of his wife, Dorothy Maguire, a Quaker minister. The theme of remaining true to religious beliefs in a time of change (the Civil War) still holds true today. You will recognize many of the supporting players in this Technicolor 50's epic but the movie also contains an early and effective Tony Perkins performance and raises genuine questions about pacifism. The movie has a sense of humor as well as a conscience and I recommend it.
Movie Review: This Is Cinema Summary: 5 Stars
There is something mysteriously good in a fine film. Friendly Persuasion, though in some regards modest, definitely rates the title of fine: it makes you reconsider slightly what a film is and who we are. Treating its own conventions by turns wryly and earnestly, it is a real fifties film, with life and gentle sparkle. Its great success resides in its being able to weave the serious and the not-so-serious into one, touching on some simple truths in the process. Wondrously cast, wonderfully scored, handsomely filmed: don't miss it.
Movie Review: A Friendly Family Film Summary: 5 Stars
In today's choices for film viewing I've rediscovered an older film ( in the 50's) that tells a wonderful story just as contemporary today as its setting during the Civil War. It tells of young love, deep family values, and the conflict of religious ideals and the daily struggles during war time. A beautiful story told by stellar movie stars, all done without contrived special effects. You feel the story and it becomes you.
A welcomed treat for all.
