Movie Reviews of Friendly PersuasionMovie Review: Fantastic Wyler/Cooper/McGuire Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Hadn't seen this movie for a few years ... and it continues to carry the same power weight it always has. Wyler had a way of filming a movie in such beautiful ways, whether it be the characters or the settings. I cannot imagine anyone other than Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire in the lead roles, they really aced it. It's a shame that Anthony Perkins is always thought of as "Norman Bates" because he was a fine actor in so many other roles, and he shined in this movie, perhaps the best performance of his career.
Sadly, this Civil War-era movie relates very much to the issues today. So many conflicts within the country, family and one's self. This movie will be classic for the ages.
Movie Review: No Film Has Ever Taken It's #1 Spot For Me! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my absolute favorite film. I have about 7 more that I really like, but I never need to hesitate one second, when asked my one favorite,it is always "Friendly Persuasion". It has everything, drama, humor, breathtaking scenery and a fabulous music score, plus a little love interest, and also very inspirational, with some deeper issues of life, having to be faced by the family members. In my opinion, it is just absolutely flawless, and it makes me want to cry, because no other movie even comes close to this quality, and that is so sad. This is a great movie to watch with family or friends,it is a joy to be shared.
Movie Review: One of Gary's best movies Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second favorite Gary Cooper movie and the only movie better in my opinion is Sergeant York. While some here complain about not having many special features on the dvd. This movie was done by the best movie company at presenting classic movies on dvd WB. There is a behind the scenes clip as a bonus features of Gary and the rest of the cast practicing for a scene that is priceless. The movie presentation is also first rate and is 5 stars as is the movie. You just don't get special features on other Gary Cooper movies that are not owned by WB with the one exception of High Noon.
Movie Review: A Favorite on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I admit I am biased when I talk about this movie. I used to watch it on Beta with my grandfather and the movie holds many memories for me. As a grown up I can say that it is a fun movie if you take it at face value. Don't try and tell me that the music used is wrong or the Quaker message isn't strong enough. Take the story for what it is, a family in the middle of the Civil War. Even in the worst of times there can be lightheartedness. And no, it doesn't follow the book to the letter, but this movie is entertaining. And really, isn't that why we buy movies? To be entertained?
Movie Review: Profound Civil War Tale of Conscience Summary: 5 Stars
Conflict of conscience over duty and honor are in the spotlight here. Cooper subtle as ever turns in a brilliant performance as he operates on the fringe of his beliefs but must ultimately confront them. Anthony Perkins turns in one of his best performances as the son distracted by wayward thoughts of glory on the battlefield contradictory to his religious beliefs. The score by Dimitri Tiomkin is lively, affectionate and moving while the cinematography is very effective visually tender giving the viewer a wide range of colors creating great atmosphere. This is a classic.
