Movie Reviews of Friendly Persuasion

Movie Review: Charming and thoughtful
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember seeing this movie on TV as a child. I just had to have a copy for my own family! FP presents a humorous, thoughtful and utterly charming look at 19th-century American Quakers. I'm presuming quite a bit of authenticity, since Jessamyn West (the author of the book by the same title) was an on-set consultant. The story presents everyday Quaker life in a delightfully humorous and respectful way. The difficult issue of non-violence based in faith (when the Civil War comes to call) is portrayed with gut-wrenching realism by the eldest son (the pre-Psycho Anthony Perkins). Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire are outstanding, the little boy (and a goose!) is a scene-stealer and Marjorie Main (aka Ma Kettle) is a hoot as a widow with 3 lonely love-starved daughters! A great buy for any family.

Movie Review: Friendly Persuasion a Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a classic movie from the period where movies were entertaing by reason of good acting, a good plot and set without need for high tech (phony and impossible) special effects. Moverover, it leaves you uplifted and happy feeling, not morose and brooding about the "darkness" of the world. I guess that's what a lot of us old timers miss. Looking a the glass half full instead of always half empty, even in adversity. This movie is based on just that concept: that the world, on balance, is a good place and our views are shaped by our actions, no matter what is going on at the time. Most of us these days will never experience the Civil War in our backyards or have our basic beliefs challenged, but still are constantly negative. What a shame. Watch this movie for an alternative.

Movie Review: A movie that does your heart good!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a warm, heart-felt movie. A realistic family during the Civil War time coming to terms with who they are as relates to their faith, their life, the war, each other, the lives around them. Watching their internal struggling with and through it all. NONE of this is done in a maudelin or preachy way - it's just like you're getting to be a part of some people's lives for a few moments. Shares a real message of being true to who you are in yourself, while at the same time respecting other persons for who they are. Warm and thought provoking - with LOTS of humor throughout - subtle humor. (Like you're "on the inside" -privvy to the private bantering and nuances between persons.)

I'm not one to own movies myself. But this is one I have!

Movie Review: "Concientious Conciences"
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is Gary Cooper at his best--not to minimize the other players because they are all perfect in their parts--you may be a little shocked to see Tony Perkins (Psycho, Tall Story) as Gary's son, but he plays the part well. There is so much humor in this film--a film about rather straight-laced people. One of my favorite scenes is when Gary is "running the buggy" at breakneck speed against the protestations of his wife. This is a little guilty pleasure that he indulges in on a regular basis. The Quaker family is confronted by all sorts of moral questions that challenge their faith. They do the best they can, with dignity and humor. You would not be disappointed in this movie. It is one you can watch over and over again.

Movie Review: Friendly Persuasion
Summary: 5 Stars

Based on the popular novel by Jessamyn West, "Persuasion" is a sensitive portrayal of Quaker lifeways with flashes of merry humor, especially around Jess, who can't resist racing a neighbor's buggy or the allure of a new pump organ--both frowned upon by his stoic religion. Blacklister Michael Wilson's progressive-minded script doesn't shy from weighing militarism against Christian love, and Wyler's solid direction of stars Cooper and McGuire makes their love for each other seem unfailingly genuine. Future "Psycho" star Perkins is also excellent as the gangly, intense teen who joins the Union defenders against his parents' wishes. For a quaint, incisive look at old-time Quaker life, try a bit of "Friendly Persuasion."
