Movie Reviews of Friendly PersuasionMovie Review: May we have SIX stars, please? Summary: 5 Stars
This has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in the theatre as a girl (giving away my age). I have never found a wrong step. Nothing jars or distracts from the joy and sorrow. I am not a "Friend" but I have read Ms. West's works and those of other members of the Society of Friends and known a few in my life. I think the portrayals of the spiritual struggles and conflicts of the family are representative of those encountered today by many of all faiths and no faith. Hardly any of the choices we make are simple or without serious consequence, if we are aware of our inner life and our impact on the world around us.
Nevertheless, The Friendly Persuasion is an uplifting and humorous experience, as much as it is enlightening and thought provoking. Enjoyable for audiences of all ages and interests - excepting the most shallow. I have no concerns with crude language, nudity or other more modern methods of communication, being a true product of the '60s. However, it is just as stimulating to watch a more modest and sincere portrayal of the past. Things were not simpler then, just more physically grueling. Love, war, commitment, conflicts of loyalty - universal themes for every time and every person.
Movie Review: Great Revelations Summary: 5 Stars
There is a point in the movie where Josh (Anthony Perkins) makes the decision to enlist and fight. The mother tries to get Gary Cooper to stop him but he tells her he is only is father, not his conscience. I wish this kind of thinking was inspired in today's society. It is the parents' job to teach right from wrong and proper values but it is the person's self identity that must be answered to. The following line may not be correct but I love it when he says "A man's life is not worth a hill of beans unless he follows his conscience". Like the Bible tells us, on the day of reckoning, there will be many at the gate yelling and screaming, "Lord, Lord, did I not do great works in thy name?, but it will be only the ones who bear the fruits of the Spirit that shall be allowed into heaven." Think I paraphrased but it is in Matthew 7. I may not go to buildings or temples to worship but I do not forsake the fellowship of others who believe the way I do.
Can't believe the used cost is so high however, it is a great movie with the great lessons being taught and the humor especially at the home of the widowed woman and her 3 daughters and the piano/harpsicord thing.
Worthy to be in my collection.
Movie Review: Five Star Masterpiece!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this film many years ago, and when it finally arrived on DVD, I knew I wanted it as part of my collection. Excellent screenplay, with an well chosen cast to complete a heartfelt story of a quaker family just prior to the civil war. A beautiful music score that truly enhanced a well acted film. The only downside was that the film was not released in stereo, and the quality as far as the audio was bland. This was odd since stereo in motion pictures was first released in 1953 with the film The Robe. Afterwards films were released left and right with this new format, since the fifties brought us numerous musicals. Even so, if it were not released in actual stereophonic sound, it could have been enchanced for better quality. This is true of much older films, such as How Green Was My Valley in the early fortys. Rent this film, and you will be amazed at how they were able to take the music score and separate all the instruments so you would swear this was originally released in stereo, at a time it was unknown. At any rate that is my only complaint. The film itself is truly worth watching with the whole family. They don't make them like this anymore. Five Stars!!!
Movie Review: Watch it with your children! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this absolutely brilliant movie when I was 12 years old, and it left a lasting impression on me. When my children were young, we recorded the movie from a tv broadcast, and watched it numerous times as a family. So many subtle lessons and joys permeate the movie, from start to finish! Watch it with your children, and talk about it! It is a wonderful thing to share.
One thing becomes increasingly evident, the more often you watch this film: Gary Cooper is one of the greatest screen actors of all time. His comic repertoire of grimaces, twitches, and various other expressions is amazing, yet non-intrusive. He brings a simple integrity to his performance that often makes you forget you are watching an actor. Anthony Perkins is brilliant as the conflicted son. Perkins deserved Academy Awards for this performance and Psycho, and nothing will ever convince me otherwise.
Watch Cooper carefully in this role, and then watch a dramatic performance by Kevin Costner. You'll see elements of Cooper in Costner, and you'll emerge with a greater appreciation of what Cooper was able to do on screen. Cooper is clearly the master, Costner the student.
Movie Review: A lovely movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is a lovely movie, for many reasons.
1. Gary Cooper returns to the boyish innocence that he had before he'd done dark movies like The Fountainhead and High Noon.
2. Everyone is genuine in their roles; none of the cast members seem like they're acting.
3. It takes place in the Civil War, but there is no personal tragedy in the family like you're led to anticipate will happen. Everything goes back to normal in the end.
4. The movie is not mocking toward the Quakers, though it pokes fun at them (there's a big difference between the two).
5. There's not an evident political message in the movie (even though the writer was a communist/Marxist who would later write Che!), which is a rarity in films about wars. The messages are that you have to do as your conscience tells you, and that self-defense is not the same as murder. The movie favors moderation rather than abandonment of your beliefs, and the mother, Dorothy McGuire, characterizes that the most of all.
I can't really say anything negative about this movie! It's quite a comical movie.
