Movie Review: And now for something different....
Summary: 4 Stars
I learned of this soprano through her "Doll Song" (from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann), which appears on YouTube. She's a doll like you've NEVER seen before and will never see elsewhere! Petibon's take on the role defies belief. Despite her incredibly unorthodox approach to much that she sings and acts, her command of coloratura technique is genuinely impressive. She possesses an extended range and reaches great heights effortlessly. The staging on this DVD is off-beat--as are the accompaniments--but in balance, this different kind of "recital" is fun to watch, even though I was looking for more coloratura dazzlers. Knowing what I know now, would I have purchased this DVD? Yes, particularly to share with my concert-loving friends--to watch their reactions!
