Movie Reviews of FreaksMovie Review: Real People-Side Show Summary: 5 Stars
This film was banned for a while for exploiting the people involved, the freaks of the sideshows of the 1930's. This is a very entertaining film with real people, the only people wearing make-up are the clown and Josephine-Joseph Half-woman/Half-man. There are a variety of people, Daisy and
Violet Hilton-the Siamese Twins, Hans and Frieda-brother and sister in real life from the Doll family. Schlitzie, Elvira and her sister(?)-the pinheads. The armless women. Johnny Eck, the Half-man. Plus others that will amaze you. I have this film in many versions. If you are interested in the way the circus life was in the 1930's then you should get this film.
I suggest the DVD because it has more than just the movie, it has interesting history about the people once called freaks, whereas the video is just the movie. It is in black and white, well worth the money.
Movie Review: Excellent Picture Quality Summary: 5 Stars
You can read other reviews for the story line and the strengths and weaknesses of the film. This is a flawed film in many ways, yet it is a fascinating and brave film. Todd Browning deserves credit for raising the questions presented here and for treating the actors with dignity.
I have seen this movie a few times, usually on Turner Classic Movies. I was pleasently surprised with this edition. The picture and sound quality was much better than I was expecting.
Be aware this film is not to everyone's taste. Some won't be able to get past the less than stellar acting. Others may feel the unfortunate displayed here were exploited. Keep in mind Todd Browning was a member of a traveling circus in his early years and this is a heartfelt effort by him to bring understanding to those who he worked with.
Movie Review: Unique film experience Summary: 5 Stars
Don't be put off by the claims of exploitation that had this film banned for many years, and make it still unavailable in the UK. A little research will show that the so-called expolited individuals were heavily involved in the production of the film, and this shows in the content. There is no film like it. It is both a revenge thriller, and a Historical document. At times disturbing, I feel it is redeemed by the outcome. Over 70 years old, it still grips in 2007, and is a fascinating insight into what was acceptable not so very long ago. The DVD is great, as it has accompanying documentary footage and interviews, as well as the original Theatrical 'warning' disclaimer. I urge any serious film fan, and those interested in Social History, to get a copy while they can.
Movie Review: Now this is a real classic. Summary: 5 Stars
I saw Tod Browning's other "classic," Dracula, and it was weak, boring and not scary at all. On the other hand, "Freaks," a movie that could never be made today, yet hasn't aged at all in 70 years (except that the strong man is downright puny by today's standards), is powerful, moody and constantly entertaining. Betrayal, revenge, loyalty, love, and some really trippy freaks. What could be better? Ok, the sound quality could be better, but that's about all. And too bad the alternate endings have been lost. "One of us" the freaks say to the lovely but evil trapeze artist, but she's not one of them--she doesn't deserve to be! Definitely one of the all-time greats.
Movie Review: A must for all historians Summary: 5 Stars
Freaks is a powerful movie, one that may even push you to tears. The reason to this is the fact that the "Freaks" are for the most part real human beings who were born with deformities. These actors were then cast as the circus freaks for this film. In our ultra sanitized modern day life style we no longer are aware of the past.
People like this existed.
People like this had feelings.
People like this were mercelessly tormented.
Freaks shows us what it would be like living in the 1930's with a deformity such as this.
This movie is an eye opener and a must see.
Safe travels:
David
