Movie Reviews of Freaks

Movie Review: The most original horror movie ever
Summary: 5 Stars

I was amazed and in awe when I saw "Freaks".
I have always been fascinated with anything out of the ordinary and the real life oddities in this film were amazing to watch I was particularly mesmerized by Shlitzie the pinhead,Shlitzie was actually male but to heighten the freak appeal they put him in a dress and made him wear a bow in what little bit of hair he had on the top of his pin head. The story was interesting and good wins out over evil .Anyone who has ever had a fascination with the bizarre should see this cult classic for sure .There is a scene where it's raining and the freaks are slithering and crawling under a wagon with knives in their mouths and some have guns,it's very frightening and well shot .I was also amazed by the Caterpillar man,he was just a head connected to a stump and could light a cigarette and he would also roll around and get wherever he needed to go.It was wild.I also read where he had fathered several children"how I have no clue".Freaks is a one of a kind cult classic not to be missed.

Movie Review: "Drink from the loving cup!" ;-)
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie last night and was very happy with it.
I had never heard of this movie until exploring around on Amazon. This is the kind of movie that would define the meaning of the term "cult classic". It's great to see that even in the 1930's, that edgy (especially for the time) films like this were made, because this is a film that could never be re-done by todays standards. The story is simple, and the characters and actors are simply fascinating! Tod Browning does a good job of getting all of his little "freaks" their respective screen time. A very enjoyable movie from start to finish.

The DVD also gets some great special treatment as far as "Special Features" are concerned. Very interesting commentary, as well as a few fantastic shorts from various historians and sideshow performers with great details to the history of the movie and all of the performers who appeared in it!

I am extremely happy to have this movie in my DVD collection! Highly recommended!

Movie Review: A cult classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

The glorious masterpiece is a true real nightmare. We end to forget the presence of human beings who live in the dark side of the world. Browning with all the possible realism, shows us the low corners of the human depravation, somewhat it makes us to reflect around the adequate place where the pretended ugliness of the soul habits: are they or on the contrary the sickness triviality of office mercenaries who get some undeniable profits with the morbid exhibition masked beneath the title of entertaining?

This terrifying vision around of life and times of weird inhabitants of the sideshow world can shock you; Browning does not employ any special effects; they are real freaks; so the visual impact is even higher than you may expect. I have not had any other reference of his approach 's horror until the entry of Herzog in 1969 with "Even dwarfs started small" and lately with David Lynch 's "Eraser head" and "The elephant man."

Not recommended for squeamish.

Movie Review: One of a kind movie...
Summary: 5 Stars

This cult classic has a reputation for being extremely creepy and unnerving; after watching this movie you will agree it's reputation is highly deserved. It must be seen to be believed (and even then you won't believe what you are seeing). Some of the images in the film which will haunt you for the rest of your life. And don't try to be all politically correct by saying things like "I'm not going to watch a movie which makes fun of people less fortuante and exploits their deformities". "Freaks" is highly respectful of those deformities and it's some of the so called "normal" people in this movie who are the monsters.

The DVD is a very nice presensation with a clear picture and nice sound especially considering this film was made in 1932. Also, there is an hour long documentary about "freaks" with interviews which give fascinating insight into the the life of the whole carny culture.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED but definately not for the weak and sensitive.

Movie Review: Beyond Belief - 1932
Summary: 5 Stars

When you consider that this film, actually a type of
"historical documentation" of the world of human anomalies (Freaks of the sideshow), was made in 1932, it's a 5-Star on the single merit that someone had the guts to commit the images to film. - That "someone" being Tod Browning, the producer, (of "Dracula" fame). When you view it, you won't wonder why it was banned for many years - you'll know!.

It is impossible to look away when you see the "pinheads", the "half-man", the "living torso", and all the sideshow attractions as they were. The scene around the "marriage table", is only trumped by the scene when the freaks converge on Hercules - and perhaps the "Trump Card" is the fate of the beautiful trapeze artist, and her introduction to the Freak's world - A fate she juslty deserves.

It is no wonder why this extraordinary film was selected to the National Film Registry's archive of cinematic treasures.
