Movie Reviews of Freaks

Movie Review: Gooba Gobba, Gooba Gobba...
Summary: 5 Stars

Aren't the best shock pictures, from "The Sadist" to "Saw", based on scenarios that, just perhaps, could actually happen? No zombies or vampires, just very sociopathic, very *human* monsters. "Freaks" fits neatly into that catagory, all the while flipping it on its head entirely. You see, the freaks in this film aren't the ones who appear outwardly horrific, but rather the ones whose outward beauty hides their true hideousness. Conniving trapeze artist Cleopatra seduces dwarf Hans, then poisons him after marraige to inherit his fortune. Hans wises to whats going on, and the sideshow ensemble enact a terrible vengeance against Cleo and her strongman lover Hercules. Too bad the cut footage has all been lost. "Freaks" remains delightfully disturbing more than seventy three years after it's premiere, a living testament to director Tod Browning's skill at creating genuinely chilling movies without the gore of modern films. This is absolutely essential viewing for any fan of "unusual" cinema. This version includes both alternate endings, an informative commentary track by a film historian who sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and a one hour documentary on the real life "freaks" who appear in the movie. Now, if only "The Unholy 3" would see DVD release,,,

Movie Review: One of the most humanistic horror films ever, misunderstood by some, but understood by many more...
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this film. It's one of Tod Browning's best films (along with his work with Lon Chaney), and it's one of the most memorable films ever made in any country or genre. Most people make a lot of hay over the casting of real "freaks" (I really dislike that term), that Browning was being exploitative. I don't feel he was at all. Browning really shows the "freaks" to be funny, flawed, silly, cruel, and, well, human (which they are). The ones who are the most heartless are the so-called "normal" ones, the trapeze artist who seduces the little man Hans for his money, and her hulky lover. They look normal but who are the real freaks inside. The "one of us" scene is as intense as you have heard, and the finale is one of the most disturbing and suspenseful in film history. The acting isn't the greatest here (many of the "freaks" are not professional actors), but it doesn't detract from the power of the film. This film was rarely screened after its debut (a lot of people were genuinely terrified of it), but now it's readily available, which is a good thing. It's one of the best horror films ever made, and one of the most humanistic ones as well.

Movie Review: Nothing to freak out about
Summary: 5 Stars

When this was first released, the newspapers and even radio film critics, churches and the movie houses, even the studio, were agahst, critical, disgusted, etc etc. AND there was nothing to freak-out about, unless that they got a dose of their own prejudice against these special folks, as well as not LIKING to admit that is why they were disturbed (offense being the best defense read: defensivness). FREAKS actually showcases the performers as the humane and socially/morally upright ones, and shows the "normal" performers as the cruel and evil ones - so superior in their "normality", that they look on the freaks with contempt. Theaters either edited down due to the new "code" coming out in Hollywood or just plain banned - and I think it's because it took the civil veneer off just how badly many people can behave towards those they feel are inferior to them. Claiming it was because it "exploited" the feaks was just a red herring to hide behind. I feel the film is a pure little treasure of early Hollywood and have been VERY happy to own it, and I cannot even count the number of times I've watched it already!

Movie Review: Gooba gobba gooba gobba-we accept her-one of us!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the era of Bella Lagosi and Lon Chaney with all the make up and horror
Tod Browning takes a shot at a movie using real life freaks and side show actors.
I think the public was not ready for that kind of viewing so it was shunned for many years....until now.
the movies plot is nothing spectacular but remember this is early film and they were still experimenting.
the show has to do with circus performers behind the scenes socially, the freaks stick together to retaliate against a kiniving acrobatist and strong man who try to take advantage of a rich dwarf who is smitten by the beautiful acrobat.
the Freaks prevail.

I heard of this movie finding out that the Ramones were really big on this movie as far as certain topics go such as Pinheads and such their anthem was "gabba gabba hey, gabba gabba we aceppt you one of us"

I gave this show 5 stars based on the viewing of the freaks and the whole concept of trying something that has never been done and still hasn't.

I give the movie and its plot 3 stars but it is early cinema

Movie Review: Gooble Gobble
Summary: 5 Stars

Tod Browning's Freaks is one of those movies that you never forget. It is a classic cult film, as its subject matter (circus freaks) could be seen as controversial, and the mainstream audience surely wouldn't find it to be entertaining. This film, like the earlier ones we saw in class, does not shoot for the mainstream, but goes along with a vision the director and the writers saw.

Even though this film is considered to be one of the best ever made, the mainstream audience wouldn't accept it, and I love it. I think that it was not accepted at the time because of people's extremely tight morals and religious beliefs. In today's world, where people have come to their senses and have begun to enjoy life, the movie is quite tame (though still disturbing to see the many deformities of nature). I agree that it is one of the best films ever made, or at least that I have seen. It is extremely memorable. For the past week, I haven't been able to get the song out of my head ("Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, we accept her, we accept her. Gooble gobble, gooble gobble one of us, one of us.")
