Movie Reviews of FreaksMovie Review: "Freaks" - A Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
The first I heard of this movie was from Stephen King's book "Danse Macabre" some years ago. After too long a time, I finally watched it.
I was stunned. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The writing, scenes, characters, and plot are mind-blowing. Even my 14 year old step-son was enamored with the film. It was brilliant.
The characters were charming, humorous, cold, loving, etc.
What really hit me was the fact that the movie was not accepted by society and that it was concidered the most 'horrific' movie at the time, which led to it being pulled from the few screens it was playing on. Three decades later - yes, thirty YEARS - the 'freak-out' phase in American society rediscovered the film and it had some success as an underground film.
Amazingly, it wasn't until 1994 that the National Film Registry put the film in its archive of cinematic treasures. That's 62 years. A lot of people lived and died durring those years. That is a long time to gain recognition.
This gives me hope, however. Just because something isn't appreciated now, doesn't mean it won't be so later. It is an astounding film that people in the 1930's simply didn't understand.
After all, who is a freak? What defines one? Is it wrong to look at someone who isn't "average" or "normal" in a different light?
I would urge anyone who likes good story-telling to see this movie - and the insightful featurette/documentary FREAKS: SIDESHOW CINEMA.
Simply amazing stuff.
Movie Review: HANZZZ!!!! I TAHLD YOU STAHP SMOKING DOES BIG SHIGARS! Summary: 5 Stars
FREAKS! It's one of a kind. FREAKS! Boggles the imagination
FREAKS! Not to be missed. FREAKS! I'm already one so how
bad can it be(don't answer that). Freaks is a wonderful film
it was made in 31 and released in 32. It's the story of
circus/sideshow performers and their lives. You have the caterpiller
man who roles his cigs. with his teeth. Two sisters who are joined
at the hip,one is married and the other one had just got engaged
to whereas the fiance say's to the other sis.husband..I guess
I'll be seeing you around! You have the real life dual sex person
one actor comments..I guess she likes you,but he don't referring
to the same person was funny. This is a movie and in no way a
documenatary on SPECIAL people. It did not last long at the box
office, and was banned in ENGLAND for over 20 years. This movie
has a heart and soul of it's own. Alejandro Jodorsky has stated
in a book on film, that this is one of his FAV. Rarely screened
in the states,it has a cult status of it's own. And was voted
number 1 cult film of ALL time. Come watch the LIL person
pour his heart out to the beautiful trapeze artist..just to
just to...Well I don't want to give away the ending now do I.
NO! You'll just have to buy the movie that John Waters said
ONE OF A KIND. YOU LOVE DAVID LYNCH? YOU LOVE KEN RUSSELL?
YOU LOVE ANDY WARHOL? YOU LOVE TERRY GILLIAM? THEN MY FRIEND
YOU WILL LOVE Review: Browning's Banned Cult Film - A True Character Study Summary: 5 Stars
Tod Browning, a former circus performer, displayed his vision when he directed Freaks in the early 30s, which was soon banned after its release in the United States. The moral message of the film was apparently too much for the MPPA and The Catholic Legion of Decency in the 30s. Freaks received cult status after it was banned and it was not allowed to be shown for decades. However, Browning's Freaks received the honors it deserved when the National Film Registry decided to add it to it's archives in 1994.
A small traveling circus has several performances by people with congenital birth defects of the most severe kind. These men and women go through ruthless exploitation as people are attracted to these shows through their curiosity which is enhanced by imagination and tales. One of these character's story is told as it surrounds a young prince of extremely short stature and a beautiful trapeze artist as they join in a treacherous love story. This love story depicts the truth behind the truly grotesque as human behaviors and human appearances collide.
Freaks is a brilliant film with a strong moral message, which should be pondered for as long as repugnant human behavior exists. This means that Freaks has a timeless message that can measure up to any film made in our current society. Ultimately, Freaks offers the audience an excellent cinematic event as the deformed characters chant, "we accept her...one of us".
Movie Review: Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us! Summary: 5 Stars
The Freaks in this movie were not the only things freaky in this movie. One of the funnier scenes in this movie was the party where the Freaks began to chant, "Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us!". How wild and inventive this was. The Freaks in this movie were some unusual people to be sure but they had good hearts. the acting was wooden I suspect but to me it just added to the realness of the movie.
Freaks was a movie about basic good and evil. Freaks showed that those the world considered most different held the same basic humane values most of us hold dear. Yes the unique folk in the movie were different but but they were more humane and honorable than the strong man and trappese artist.
I love this Freaks Movie because, being autistic I like people who are different. I like that this Freaks movie has a very positive message while being lots of fun to watch. I wished we had the complete original version. I pray somewhere a complete original copy with its original shiocking ending is found. My research tells me in the original ending of Freaks the Strong man was condemned to a life as a high pitched sapprano as a result of injury to his, "pride". The lady trapeese artist became a odd ball freak in the form of half Duck half lady.
Enjoy this movie there is plenty of meaning and laughs in the plot.
Movie Review: Freaks Summary: 5 Stars
A family of circus performers is broken apart when a beautiful acrobat seduces one of the dwarfs in order to steal his fortune, but when the plot is discovered the group rallies to oust their betrayer. FREAKS is easily Tod Browning's crowning achievement. While his interpretation of DRACULA may have created some of the genre's most defining moments, his visual storytelling and stylism are far exceeded in this film. It is so rich in character, depicting the so-called "freaks" in such an endearing and human manner, while showing the most cruel and intolerable sides of the "normal" characters. Every single performance is genuine and sincere, transposing the viewer into a fly on the wall in what feels like an honest portrayal of true events. On top of the superb characterizations, the incredible carnival settings give the film even more authenticity, painting the backdrop in stimulating curves and High Gothic atmosphere. The final nightmarish sequence where the carnival folk stalk the vile Cleopatra through the mud and rain is the only moment of true horror, but while it stands out as the most frightening moment in the film, it also contradicts the positive portrayal of the freaks established throughout the rest of the plot. FREAKS is a film classic that transcends the genre, and is a must-see for all film fans.
