One of the most entertaining television shows I've watched. The characters and the whole setting is pretty realistic, which is why I was drawn to it. It's sad that Freaks and Geeks died prematurely-- it introduced a whole new generation/audience of viewers to very intelligently written television. Nonetheless, the leaps and bounds made by Judd Apatow in writing this series has paid off handsomely as he is now acknowledged to be one of entertainment's funniest (if not THE funniest) comedy guru in recent history.
Freaks and Geeks is like a funnier version of Wonder Years, with a dab of Popular and a dash of 7th Heaven. The characters seem richly drawn, as the experiences of high school in the 80s are told in (eerily) accurate detail. Every nuance, every (seeming) cliche is included. I was very entertained watching this show. The DVD set includes great extras as well, with commentary for select episodes as well as some deleted scenes.
I gave this only four stars due to the abruptness of the story however. Of course, a lot may argue that high school storytelling never really has a happy ending-- but I think an ending would have sufficed, at least for me. Moreover, if you really do enjoy Freaks and Geeks, I suggest you also check out Apatow's follow-up to this series, Undeclared. It's a more hilarious take on young adulthood in the college years, set in a more contemporary time.
