Movie Reviews of Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series (Yearbook Edition)Movie Review: The one to own for F&G geeks (and freaks) Summary: 5 Stars
This is the version I purchased a few years back that then went out of print, and I swear I watch the whole thing twice a year. There are two bonus discs loaded with goodies, a ton of commentaries from directors, writers, and the cast (a few of whom - the Geeks - were already unrecognizable sounding by that point, having finally passed through the threshold of puberty). At any rate, it's all here - the series that launched the Apatow bonanza, with so much talent behind and in front of the camera it's astonishing. But all that nerdery aside, it's the show itself that still holds up well. There are some uneven episodes, to be sure, but it's pretty much a delight from start to finish. The non-alcoholic beer keg party, the trick or treating, Tuba Girl, the unforgettable Viking mascot head, the laser show, the band called Creation, the fake IDs, it's all here, in painfully funny (and sometimes just painful) fashion. As one who went to high school just a few years after this show was set, I can relate to the 80s references and cultural feel, but it's pretty universal stuff no matter when you went to high school.
Oh and this edition comes with, yes, the faux yearbook, which is also a must for fans.

Summary of Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series (Yearbook Edition)Unlike the beautiful teens populating most television shows in 1999, Freaks And Geeks, created by Paul Feig and executive produced by him and Judd Apatow (40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Super Bad), told the stories of the rest of us. At McKinley High in the suburbs of Detroit in 1980, were a group of outsiders; the stoners, the tough kids, the bad girls, the brains and the dorks. It was a smart, funny, authentic testimonial to the highs and horrors of high school for the kids who didn t fit anywhere. The show, fiercely loved and supported by its fans, was cancelled after 19 amazing episodes.
As a thank you to the people who have loved and supported this show, the Cast and Creatives all came together to create this special limited Yearbook Edition.
Previously available only via the Freaks and Geeks website, and now long out of print, this special edition contains all the original episodes, commentaries and special features of the Complete Season set, plus two bonus discs all housed in a loving recreation of a 40-page yearbook, chock-full of exclusive photos, memorabilia and essays. The comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks limped through its sole season on NBC in 1999 before being expelled by the network--but not before earning critical acclaim and a devoted fan base that fought valiantly to keep it on the air. Now all 18 episodes have been released in this long-awaited boxed set, which allows longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy one of television's most poignant and funny programs about high school. Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty--Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showed failure, malice, indecision, and moments of great clarity. Likewise, the plotlines rarely offered pat solutions to the characters' conflicts--the show unfolded in a naturalistic manner, which was a welcome respite for viewers tired of flashy high school dramas. When combined with its smart dialogue and winning performances (the cast included SCTV veteran Joe Flaherty and Spider-Man star James Franco, as well as the sublime and criminally underrecognized Martin Starr and Seth Rogen as Sam's pal Bill and dry-witted Ken, respectively), the show became a haven for fans of quality television, if only for a brief period of time. The six-disc boxed set provides over 40 hours of supplemental material, which should satiate even the most obsessive of fans. Twenty-nine separate commentaries from the show's creators, cast (and as some of their parents!), composer Mike Andrews, and fans are included, as are 60 deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and cast auditions. However, the most striking extra is the warmth that radiates from the commentary participants--their pleasure in taking part in such a quality program is palpable, and will undoubtedly be echoed by all who watch these discs. --Paul Gaita
