Movie Review: FRANKENHOOKER!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Frankenhooker, it just sounds like a good time, doesn't it? I've been waiting for this dvd for a long time now. I saw this film way back when it first came out. Most folks who also saw it back then might remember the cool vhs box that said, "Wanna Date?" when you pressed it. That was a great little gimmick, wasn't it? That kind of thing was never done much, but I do remember the box for the movie The Dead Pit(which sucked by the way, or at least it couldn't live up to it's cool cover) which had the puffed out 3-D zombie on the cover who's eyes would flash green when you squeezed the box. If anyone can remember any more of those cool vhs boxes, let me know. Anyway, I was confident that Frankenhooker would hold up after all these years and it still does. Frankenhooker is the kind of film that Drive-in theaters were made for. As the title suggests, this isn't a movie taking itself seriously. It was directed by Frank Henenlotter, the B movie crusader who brought us Basket case and Brain Damage. If you've seen either of those films and thought they were dumb, you might as well stay away from Frankenhooker coz it's in the same vein. Frankenhooker herself doesn't show up til about an hour into the film, but that's all fine and dandy coz there's enough bare breasts, exploding hookers(and guinea pigs), musclebound pimps, huge crack rocks and head drilling to keep you entertained. Plus the zany, mumbling performance by James Lorinz as the mad doctor really carries the movie along. He's got some pretty damn funny lines, especially in the scene where he's inspecting the hookers. Frankenhooker herself is an amusing parody of Elsa Lanchester's Bride Of Frankenstein performance. For the mostpart her dialogue consists only of lines used by the hookers who's body parts have all gone into constructing her. It doesn't really make sense that she would do this(or that men would explode when touching her), but who the hell is watching this for scientific accuracy? Definitely worth viewing again if you haven't seen it in a while. Also definitely worth viewing if you want a good time. Hell, my wife even liked this movie! Though I must say the price tag on this one's a bit high considering what's on the disc and all(a couple of interviews and a commentary. Nothing THAT special), but I guess it all boils down to how much you want it. It might be worth it if they'd have made the dvd case talk.

Movie Review: Some assembly may be required.
Summary: 5 Stars

What more can anyone really say? With a title that always brings a schoolboy smirk to my face and some of the most ridiculous scenes in a modern horror film that I can recall - ''Frankenhooker'' is the perfect midnight movie for fans of subversive and rather silly cinema.

Director Frank Henenlotter (recently only returning from MIA with the eagerly awaited BAD BIOLOGY) has always made movies that walk the line of absurdity. From his ''Basket Case'' trilogy to his drug addiction metaphor splatter epic ''Brain Damage'', Henenlotter's movies have always been horror comedies with an undercurrent of an actual idea behind them. Not just 'face value' horror pap - actually, something going on behind all the rubber and blood. Frankenhooker, although not as clever as something like 'Brain Damage' - does work on many levels, but also does what it says on the tin. It has a woman reanimated as a hooker. Which for me, is what makes this director very special.

The story has Jeffrey Franken (played to perfection by James Lorinz) overcome by the death of his fiance (Patty Mullen) in a freak lawn mower accident. Distraught to the fact that his love no longer has a body (and only a severed head!), he decides to re-animate her by collecting body parts of various prostitutes in the vain hope that he can somehow recreate his diseased partner. Along the way, Jeffrey gets involved in 'super crack', a pimp named zorro and many, many ladies of the night. It's all played for laughs and is easily the work of a guy who loves 50s nudie movies and gross out gore and comedy. Its low budget actually helps keep the movie on the seedy side and the cast are pitch perfect in their over the top delivery. Henenlotters' direction is sharp and his screenplay is both funny, playful and ridiculous.

Synapse Films' disc is well produced with a decent transfer and a host of (though short) documentaries and featurettes - one featuring Patty Mullen recollecting the movie and the other with Gabe Bartolas talking about the various effects. The commentary by Henenlotter and Bartolas is both funny and involving. All in all, not the most thought provoking film out there - but, if you are on the lookout for great fun, cheep gore and exploding hookers - this movie is for you. All three of you.

Movie Review: Frankenhooker (1990)
Summary: 5 Stars

Im sure almost all horror fans are familiar with the classic "Frankenstein" from the 1930s. "ITS ALIVE! ITS ALIVE!", im sure all of you know that. Well, here is one of many Frankenstein spoofs, FrankenHOOKER. What a title, huh? I'll start by saying this movie is just pure hilarious, and a pure movie to watch in the 'dorm with your buddies havin some beers. This is a perfect party movie.

The plot centers around Jeffrey. All this guy does, is sit in his house and garage creating all of his strange inventions, such as a brain with an eyeball growing out of it! He has sort of a heavyset, chunky girlfriend. She even later says she had Jeffrey staple her stomach! And shes still fat? What? Is this chick like Carnie Wilson?!

Anyways, one particular invention Jeffrey has made was a remote control lawnmower, which isn't too bad of an idea, until Elizabeth is being a dumbass and stands right infront of the thing while tinkering with the remote control, and is sliced and diced. (On her dads birthday too!). So Jeffrey is let all shock, just sitting in his bedroom, thinking of a plan to restore his girlfriend, when he comes up with the idea of using hookers. So he tends the help of Zorro, and NOT the Zorro your thinking of, he borrows two things from this guy. His crack, and his girls. Jeffrey thanks turns the crack "super", literally. He blows up 10 hookers, sews them all together, and rebuilds Elizabeth. The only problem is, she has the mind of a prostitute, and goes around blowing up all the guys who choose her.

This film is directed by FRANK......Henenlotter. You'll probably most know him from directing the Basket Case trilogy. This movie is a roller coaster, its so fun to watch, its a trip, by the name, youll know what you get with Frankenhooker.

I give it a full 5/5!

Movie Review: Frankenhooker...Step right up to see the exploding hooker
Summary: 5 Stars

Frankenhooker: 8 out of 10: Any movie featuring both super crack and exploding hookers will have to work pretty hard to disappoint me.

Throw in the fact that the director is none other than Basket Case auteur Frank Henenlotter (Where has he been the last ten years?) and the lead is Street Trash scene stealer James Lorinz (Only found in small screen bit parts of late) and I was expecting to be blown away like, well, like an exploding hooker.

Frankenhooker alas isn't necessarily all that good. The female lead (Penthouse model Joanne Ritchie) clearly is a good sport but not an actual actress per se and the movie really loses some steam in the third act when the titular character becomes the focus. Also exploding hookers sound better on the page than Henenlotter manages to present it on screen.

What does work however, works very well indeed. Lorinz is at his quirky schizophrenic best and nobody does Dinkins' era New York sleaze like Henenlotter. The movie overall certainly is entertaining enough.

What surprisingly brings the most fun to the party are the scenes of depravity and drug use that we usually associate with a too serious by half urban drama rather than a straight forward horror - comedy. (It's like an Abel Ferrara movie done for laughs.) The plenteous collection of native crazies Henenlotter puts together make for a dynamic viewing experience. The movie is also genuinely funny at times and the humor never feels forced.

If the thought of exploding hookers and super crack fills you with an irrelevant glee then I highly recommend this film. If you feel that these are serious social issues that should not be mocked then stay very far away.

Movie Review: Hilarious horror comedy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Jeffery is a busy man who experiments on many things and was happy having a fiancee named Elizabeth until a tragic accident happened one day. She's been sliced to pieces, Jeffery has only one solution and it's to bring her back to life again. He goes out to New York City to look for some prostitutes and use a special experimental crack to make the hookers literally go out with a bang, he stitches all parts together along with Elizabeth's head then use lightning to resurrect her as a sleazy minded hooker who can literally kill men during sex but can Jeffery snap her out of it or will she be a sex-crazed undead killer?

Entertaining and over-the-top horror comedy from Frank Henenlotter (director of "Basket Case" and "Brain Damage") brings another winning combination of laughs, splatter and sleaze galore. The acting is kind of bad but there is a twisted sense of humor here such as a exploding guiena pig after smelling the explosive crack's smoke or perhaps the funniest ending since "Some Like It Hot!", this is a sidesplitting and sexy comical horror movie that is guaranteed to leave you in stitches.

This special edition DVD has the unrated uncut version and nifty extras like commentary by Frank Henenlotter and make-up artist Gabe Bartalos, theatrical trailer, interview with Patty Mulen who played Elizabeth in this movie, three featurettes and photo gallery.
