Movie Reviews of Frank Zappa - Baby Snakes

Movie Review: worth waiting for!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great dvd all-round. Considering this is 1970's source material, the video is great. The camera work of the concert footage gives solo players their due and it's nice to see "pre-mtv" footage without machine-gun edits! And to see Adrian Belew in a context outside of King Crimson is very interesting! The sound is impeccable (I would expect nothing less as the Zappa cannon is always top-notch in this area). I got into Frank a little too late to see him play live, so this is the next best thing. The Roxy trailer has me frothing at the mouth! George Duke and Chester Thompson are such killer musicians! I would encourage anyone interested in Frank to pick this DVD up! Can't wait for future DVD's and would also like to note that Zappa bandmates Napoleon Murphy Brock and Ike Willis are keeping the spirit of Zappa's compositions alive with their tribute band "Project/Object" - phenominal shows have been presented in the Philadelphia area and they tour often! Catch 'em if you can!

Movie Review: Baby Snakes still a Python
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is great fun for any Zappa fan. Yes the Camera work could have shown more of Zappa on his axe, but the sound visuals and play list more than make up for it. Zappa and his mates are having a great time jamming to all the tunes we all know and love so much, along with great times and horseplay behind the scenes and back stage before after and during the show. You can really tell the folks in the crowd are into the show, from the costumes, to singing along and just going nuts. A huge bonus to me is the great claymation video mixed into the movie, its really some amazing stuff. If you ever wanted to see Zappa in concert but never did, or even if you have like myself, you will enjoy this DVD. It's Zappa at the peak of his creativity, with his best band mates. From Adrian Belew's hypnotic droning, to Terry Bozzio's Hard paced Drum beats, to all of Frank's great axe playing this is Zappa's best overall DVD around right now. Do yourself a favor and pck it up today.

Movie Review: Goodness snakes! What a trip!
Summary: 5 Stars

Not just a glimpse of genius, but a virtal smorgasbord! In this video, many twisted minds come together like baby snakes in the night, producing a sensory overload unequalled by any group of artists. You have the totally bizarre claymation freak-outage, the uninhibited backstage showing off, and the not-frequent-enough footage of Zappa squeezing every drop of musical talent from his band members in rehearsal. Then you have the irreplaceable concert footage- it's such a blast to watch Terry Bozzio clad in a devil's mask and underwear, banging away at the drums like a maniac. Zappa commands the stage but then drags in an assortment of audience members, a blow up doll, a talking toy cop car and even his road crew manager for comic measure, as if he needs to get more random. Oh yeah, there's some amazing guitar playing, too.
If this sounds like fun to you, you are not normal and you will enjoy watching this. I totally recommend it!

Movie Review: A Grim Reminder of the Glorious Past
Summary: 5 Stars

Watching this DVD shows how musicianship in what is left of "rock music" has really declined. Whatever happened to guitar solos?

Anyway, fans of Zappa will, of course, love the concert footage. I hate claymation, so I hated the claymation parts. Those gentlepersons who listen to Classic Rock stations will probably find lots to like here, as well. Actually, this band cooks so hot that just about anybody would like to see it.

I also enjoyed some of Zappa's zingers (in addition to his explicitly filthy lyrics--well, they are!). Like, Zappa humbly thanks the crowd, then says, "But let's not get maudlin. After all, the next song is 'Dynamo Hum.'"

Not only has musicianship declined to undetectable levels, so to have the crowds. The crowd in this DVD was really cool. Especially Angel. And the helmet Zappa puts on.

You will probably like this DVD whoever you are.

Movie Review: aren't we being a little picky, gang?
Summary: 5 Stars

I have come across a few reviews for this release which complain about the quality of the print and lack of bonus material. Let's put things in perspective. This concert was shot 25 years ago, in 1977,the same year "Star Wars" Came out. There was no VHS tape yet and no video rental market! Any bonus material was left on the cutting room floor!! When George Lucas planned to re-release "Star Wars" He found the original negatives had deteriorated to the point where they were almost unusable to make new theatrical prints of the movie. It is entirely possible that the print of "Baby Snakes" used for the DVD is the best source material and to digitally restore the images would have been too expensive. Let's be thankful that great care was given to enhancing the music, which is what this film is about.
