Movie Reviews of Frank Zappa - Baby SnakesMovie Review: Historic concert - really adds to what you hear on CD's Summary: 5 Stars
I went to this concert, and looking back on it I just went because I thought it would be a happening event. I did think that it was silly and fun, and of course Zappa's solos were amazing. I felt cool because I was into jazz then and more often would go hear something like McCoy Tyner, and not many rock concerts any more. Now I have introduced my kids to this music and am rediscovering what a genius Zappa was, and I feel bad that I missed the point while he was still alive. It is a bit like Alfred Hitchcock, how it was only after he died that I realized he was an artistic genius. I am saying this because of some comments about his not being a good guitar player. Aside from being a superficially foolish comment, it is also deeply idiotic. Zappa was not only a great technician and improvisor, he wrote, arranged and conducted brilliantly, and had a completely original concept of music. You don't have to like it, but you should understand what went into this music -- especially today when the young generation is growing up on some really bland uninspired stuff.
Zappa's concerts were like Dadaist events. The only thing missing was a shocked audience that thought they were going to see something like the Jonas Brothers -- like Jimi Hendrix when he was an unknown warmup band for the Monkees.
Movie Review: I Wish I Was Older Summary: 5 Stars
....then I might have been able to see this concert. Thank God it was taped, and I'm still able to somewhat experience what everone in the audience did on Halloween. Zappa was a showman for sure. Not only a musical genius, but his interaction with an audience is fantastic. He lets people come up on stage, sing, participate in his goofy improvised roleplays. He truly loved his fans and loved performing for them. How many artists do this now? This dvd is intended only for Zappa fans. It's long.....very long(I watched it in installments). To some, it would be 100% torture; I understand and respect that. I would feel the same watching a 3 hour Korn performance(or the Texas Chainsaw remake). Sure, all the footage may not be necessary, and you might be likely to skip some, but Zappa had a tendency to overdo things when it came to film(Uncle Meat was very long as well). If you're a Zappa fan though, try to see this once at least to get a glimpse of the man in action. If you're not a Zappa fan, there's no reason whatsoever to review this dvd and trash it(I wouldn't review a Korn dvd. What's the point? You're trying to preach to the fans!), so shut up. And remember, nobody likes you.
Movie Review: Baby Snakes Summary: 5 Stars
Pros- 3 hours of Zappa! Cons- Only 3 hours of Zappa... If you're a hardcore fan or a casual listener, this DVD has something for you. The humorous songs, the wacky instrumentals, the extended guitar solos, the backstage footage, Terry's vocal performance on Punkys Whips, that girl in the front row...IT HAS EVERYTHING!!!! It even has white guys with afros playing keyboards! He looks like Disco Stu from The Simpsons! Believe that! If you like pointless clay animation by some stoned-out freak, it has that too. But most of all, it has Frank Zappa playing the role of musical genius, and that alone is worth the price of admission. If you work for Warner Bros., you might want to turn the sound down in certain parts, because BOY IS HE MAD AT YOU!!!!! Did you know Adrian Belew played in a crud band in Nashville? GET THE MOVIE AND FIND OUT HOW FRANK SAVED HIM FROM THE CRUD SCENE!!!! Also, there's panty throwing, if you're into that sort of thing. And a fat guy with a gas mask that washes a blow-up doll in a sink! How could you NOT want to see that? Ok, I'm giving away too much here. Buy the movie and all of this will make sense somehow.
Movie Review: Mind Blowing Entertainment Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD is stuck in my memory. Probably forever. I can't think of any more complex and wonderful a DVD that I own. From the begining to fabulous ending, the show never stops, and the the music is absolutely first class. Many folks don't know of Zappa's masterful, way-out there mind. This DVD is the gateway to that place. The claymation sequences alone, are worth the price of the DVD. One can only imagine the amount of patience that went into making of these scenes. One very memorable line from Frank in conversation with claymation guru Bruce Bickford, goes something like this.... "Why did the monsters end up in the disco?" Bickford: "I don't know, I guess it was for entertainment...." Frank: "You and me Bruce, 100% entertainment all the way". That is what you get from this movie. Entertained for two and a half hours of mesmerizing sequences of music and claymation that will blow your mind. Never mind the fact that the movie is like 26 years old now. It still rocks!!!! See this film on a rainy day with the friend of your choice...wink wink... and you won't regret it!
Movie Review: Essential Zappa Summary: 5 Stars
Zappa traditionally played NYC every Halloween. This film is a snapshot of one of his Halloween shows ('77 or '78, I'm not sure which). If this film seems uneven, it's because Zappa's shows were more than just "rock concerts", they were show biz extravaganzas! Frank always incorporated humor, theatre, and a sense of absurdity, and he invariably challenged his audiences. He wasn't afraid to be spontaneous, and if sometimes something didn't work, it wasn't for lack of trying. If you never got the chance to see Zappa live, you MUST see this DVD! It doesn't show everything Zappa was capable of, but it is a great introduction to his persona. The sound is really excellent. Hopefully, there will be many more live Zappa releases. To get the full impact of his music and personality, you'd have to see his performances with various groups of musicians at various stages of his career. He never did the same thing twice! Recommended reading to accompany the DVD experience: "The Real Frank Zappa Book."
