Movie Reviews of Frances

Movie Review: Jessica Lange simply brilliant as Frances
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally saw this as a teenager and even then, thought that Jessica Lange was brilliant. Just the other night I had the pleasure of seeing this film again, and once again felt that Jessica Lange was marvellous in her role as Frances Farmer. The film is also very well paced and engaging.

If you think back to 1982, it was a huge year for Hollywood. So many powerful films came out and it was definitely a year for the actresses. Jessica Lange was up against Meryl Streep in "Sophie's Choice". The Academy gave the best actress to Meryl Streep, but you cannot argue that Jessical Lange was equally as good in "Frances". She won the best supporting actress that year instead for her role in Tootsie.

Frances is a film quite unknown to many, and that surprises me, because it is a gem of a film. I realise that there has been many debates over the facts, but it does say at the beginning of the film "based on a true story".

Jessica Lange is one of the greatest actresses of our time. Other Jessica films I recommend are: The Music Box, Cape Fear, Tootsie and Blue Sky.

Movie Review: A mesmerizing and beating film!
Summary: 5 Stars

It is not exaggerate to affirm Jessica Lange has been one of the most gifted actress of the last quarter of the century. She has the inner force of Bette Davis, the sinister mood of Joan Crawford, and the shining radiance of Greer Carson. But she is still more; her capacity to live a role with the most overwhelming naturalness makes of them one of the few Goddess of the acting.
In this movie Lange reached such artistic stature and conviction power as any other film previous or later, the fact resides in that she is so magnificent that many of my readers may disagree arguing other roles, but the question is simple and its answer may lead us to an absolute silence: Can you suggest about another actress (apart of her) capable to play such demanding role in that moment?
The awful film is based on a true story and tells us about the life of Frances Farmer: his ascending and fall in a mental Institution.
A monumental portrait, superbly directed with an exceptional cast. You don't have any pretext to acquire this towering film, one of the ten best in the eighties.

Movie Review: Haunting and powerful
Summary: 5 Stars

Jessica Lange breathes terrifying, heartbreaking life into the role of Frances Farmer in a movie I have seen too many times to count. I originally saw it in theaters when I was living in New York City, in the days before video and DVD when you had to hunt down showings at revival houses so that you could see your favorite movies again. Now I own the DVD.

The powerhouse acting, that gorgeous, swelling score, the entire concept of what happened to this long-ago actress and how powerfully the story has been re-created...its flaws notwithstanding, it gets me every time. Disturbing? Absolutely. It plumbs the depths of family tragedy, the evils of the Hollywood machine, and shameful practices at mental asylums. Jessica Lange has said that playing Frances Farmer nearly killed her. Lucky for us she did it anyway.

Movie Review: A brilliant film
Summary: 5 Stars

A brilliant film -- but troubling, very troubling. Jessica Lange gives one of greatest performances of any american actress ever. Kim Stanley also gives one of the greatest character performances ever. These two are unforgettable.

The facts of Francis Farmer's life are not entirely accurate in the film ... but Jessica Lange captures her spirit. She traverses an emotional range which few actresses are capable. She moved what could have been a mundane biographical story into the realm of art.

This is a film which should move you and has some very important things to say about the human spirit ...

Movie Review: It was a great movie if you can stand to watch it...
Summary: 5 Stars

It was a great movie if you can stand to watch it! It's hard to watch torture, physical and mental abuse and that's what Frances was subjected to. Thus making it hard to watch! I also read the book and they were very true to each other. Lange is absolutly the only actress who could have played it so well. It is a well done movie with great performers and great writing! It was well worth the horror!
