Movie Reviews of Fracture [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Underappreciated
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite flicks - so much so that I re-bought it on Blu-ray. You'll love it.

Movie Review: Great Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best crime movies I have ever seen and looks great in Blu-Ray!

Movie Review: Mind Game Movie
Summary: 3 Stars

There's nothing like a good mind game movie. And Fracture (2007), starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling, is a classically good crime thriller. I watched it for the second time tonight after seeing it a few years ago when it came out on DVD. Next to Hannibal Lector, I think this is one of Hopkins best roles because he plays such a smart and clever character who shoots his wife and then finds away to get out of being found guilty for it. The movie is a cat-and-mouse chase between Hopkins and Gosling's lawyer who is trying to convict him.

Director Gregory Hoblit crafted a solid movie...the best of his movies that I've seen, which include Frequency (2000) and Primal Fear (1996) as well. I think this movie has been under-appreciated. The production design and photography are excellent. And I love Hopkin's home in the movie, the architecture is definitely my taste. It's a blending of modern and asian minimalism with a love of classic crafted materials...much like the movie itself. The acting and chemistry between Hopkins and Gosling are excellent too. I really can't say much more than check this flick out.

Movie Review: Fracture
Summary: 3 Stars

'Fracture' is your run of the mill crime thriller with a slight twist, in that we know the defendant actually did the crime from the outset. Hopkins plays the killer in a very dry way, there's no real menace and his accent that wavers from Irish to English in any one scene only undermines his performance further. Gosling is good as the prosecutor and plays his part well. You can pretty much guess the story from the word go and we had guessed the method and ending before the first half hour was up, but that didn't detract too much from the viewing experience. There was a whole sub-story about Gosling moving job to a private law firm that served to show his ambition but added little else to the overall story and was superfluous to the final outcome. As far as thrillers go this one is pretty inoffensive and easy going, it won't shock or leave you breathless but it does keep your interest for the duration and make for a couple of hours of entertaining viewing. Look past Hopkins dire accent and you should be fine!!!

Movie Review: Why Can't Hollywood Be Bothered To Have At Least One Talented Lawyer Review Scripts?
Summary: 2 Stars

Alright, here's the deal. Those of you who are entirely ignorant of the law will enjoy this film (assuming you like suspense, criminal dramas, etc.). Hopkins, especially, is brilliant.

That being said, anybody with a legal background (at least a decent one) will be able to drive trucks through the blatant holes in this film.

Without revealing spoilers, most notably, the climax of the film is entirely wrong. The legal doctrine cited does not work that way.

This is all probably pointless, as most lawyers I know stay away from legal shows and movies for precisely this reason, but worth mentioning nonetheless. It's easier to overlook a minor plot point in which the law is distorted...much more difficult to overlook the climax.

For (decent) lawyers: 1 star
For those without a legal background (and who don't care): 3 or 4 stars...it's well acted and in an alternate universe without American legal doctrines to stand in the way, the plot is engaging.
