Movie Reviews of Foul Play

Movie Review: One Of My Favorite Comedy Films
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this when it was released to theaters and still love it, although the 70s atmosphere dates the film. Goldie Hawn is appealing as the divorced librarian whose best friend urges her to go out and have a little fun; when she picks up a hitchhiker she's suddenly is pursued by strange men with designs on her life. Chevy Chase is quite funny as the perpetually-in-trouble police lieutenant who helps her. There is a hilarious (but a tad overlong) scene with Dudley Moore as a nebbish with a wild apartment, and a marvelous performance from Burgess Meredith as Goldie's kindly landlord (who has other talents and who owns a python named Esme). Marilyn Sokol is especially funny as Goldie's paranoid co-worker who is convinced that her friend is "a light bulb waiting to be screwed." Watch out for: Billy Barty as a little person, a John Denver-like guy with a camper, and a couple of Japanese tourists.

Movie Review: Far out!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are foul deeds afoot. Probably that diabolical cabal, the "Tax the churches league."

Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) picks up a hitchhiker named Scotty (Bruce Solomon). They make a date to see a retro movie. There she hears Scotties last warning "beware of the dwarf". Scotty is DEAD. This leads to a mystery in which people are dying and a plot ensues. The only person that believes or pretends to believe her is Detective Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase). Together they must figure out if a plot exists and what to do. Her landlord (Burgess Meredith) rephrases the threat as "Beware of the midgets...they are taking over the world" and we can not forget the sinister look on Esme's (Shirley Python) face.

Seems Like Old Times

Movie Review: Wonderful!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. As a plot though it has so many holes it makes a Swiss cheese look like solid rock. What was on the film? Why did the bad guys drive their own car with their own license plate on it? Why didn't Whitey take Gloria after he killed Scarface instead of kidnapping her in the next scene someplace else? Since they thought she had the cigarettes, why didn't the bad guys look through her purse before they locked her in the room instead of just leaving the purse there beside her? I was on the bad guys' side as far as their ideas went. In any other movie sans a murder they could have been the good guys. And that for years has been my only objection to a suspenseful, exciting (really) and absodamnlutely hilarious movie.

Movie Review: It's about time DVD saw the likes of Foul Play!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been waiting for this for quite some time now. I saw this movie when I was a kid (hell, I was only 8 when it came out) and I still laugh my ass off when Goldie Hawn tries to off Billy Barty as the Bible Salesman because the dying Scotty left her the message "Beware of the dwarf...." Hysterical. Chevy Chase's first leading role. Shades of Caddyshack and later Fletch in his performance. You can't go wrong with this nostalgic look back at the late-70's. Burgess Meredith is classic as Goldie's snake-loving, karate-kicking landlord and the pre-Arthur Dudley Moore is a riot as the perverted English symphony conductor Stanley Tibbits. Still packs a lot of laughs even after all these years. Enjoy it before Hollywood goes and taints its memory with a remake.

Movie Review: A fun and funny film with some great characters
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are one of those people who dimly but fondly remembers films they saw many years ago, then you may know how I feel when I remembered and rediscovered this charming film. We don't seem to have had it released on DVD in Australia, but I found it on Amazon and was glad I picked it up - secondhand. It played fine.

The two leads only made two films together as far as I know and I own both. It might be just as well that they only made two, as that is enough, being that both of the films are well worth watching. I highly recommend this as a fine example of a comedy thriller. You even get Burgess Meredith and Dudley Moore going through their comic paces. Grab FOUL PLAY while you can !
