Movie Reviews of Fortunes of WarMovie Review: BBC MINI-SERIES - NOT TO BE MISSED Summary: 5 Stars
Olivia Manning was a British novelist of some renown, mainly due to her novels set during WWII in Bucharest, Athens and Cairo and based on the life she and her husband experienced as ex-pats and finally as exiles. During Manning's lifetime there were plans for some of her novels to be filmed but that did not transpire until 1987, several years after her death. At that time the BBC produced a brilliant mini-series called The Fortunes of War. Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh (who were later to marry and still later divorce) portrayed the characters of Harriet and Guy Pringle to such an effect that the viewer can feel these actors are indeed the Pringles (and by extension Manning and her husband). The DVD version that was issued in 2005 is a must-see for anyone who loves both literature and history and will enthrall those who celebrate the art of acting.

Movie Review: Charles Dickens and Jane Austen Go to War Summary: 5 Stars
The producers of this sweeping video have, with perfect pitch, captured both the spirit and the letter of Olivia Manning's (six) novels. From the hapless and freeloading Prince Yakimov to Dobson, the unflappable F.O. functionary, you see what it's like to live and work with war constantly advancing just over the horizon. Branaugh's Guy Pringle seems cherrily oblivous to the dangers -- even including the danger of losing Harriet (Emma Thompson) his initially naive young wife. Their journey(s), through wartime Rumania, Greece and Egypt, are journeys from simplicity to complexity, from dreams and illusions to sometimes cruel reality. Great characters, great dialogue, great plot, altogether great stuff -- the most absorbing made-for-TV series since the Singing Detective.
Movie Review: Fortunes of War Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD "Fortunes of War" has some of Englands greatist actors staring in this epic picture. Also my very favorite actors, Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, and Rupert Graves. Yes, there are other actors and they all did an excellent job. The story is a sweeping story, starting in Bulgaria and ending up in Cairo, Egypt. This story begins at the on set of World War Two. The story is about a young Englishman and his wife as they run from country to country as the German Army advances. The scenery is very well done. You get to see a way of life that existed before the Germans detroyed the world. This is an excellent film, and deserves all that stars that I can give it. This is a must see movie, well worth buying and adding to your library.
Movie Review: A little-known gem of a miniseries Summary: 5 Stars
On the brink of World War II, follow a young British academic couple (played by Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh)from Bucharest to Athens to Egypt.
Meet their friends, their refugees, their colleagues, and the locals in each country who are bewildered, befriended, bemused, or betrayed by the Brits.
Learn a lot of history painlessly as the inevitability of the war unfolds.
Become interested enough to go back to the original Olivia Manning novels; for once the film does the book justice. The series has excellent detail in costumes, language, politics, dress, silliness, and seriousness. The plot is complex and compelling, the writing literate, intelligent, and entertaining. Best of all, the acting is superb.
Movie Review: As good as it gets Summary: 5 Stars
If this type of entertainment is your thing, this is an incredibly good value. Nine bucks for six something hours - seven episodes - of great entertainment. There are plenty of reviews here about the program if you need that kind of info - I say buy it, pop some corn and stay home from the crap movies - I guess that would be almost all of them - and save yourself at least a hundred bucks and be well entertained. There's some laughs, some cries and a great story of people looking everywhere for what's right under their noses.
