Movie Review: A Psychological Study

As a previous reviewer noted, this movie was made for TV. The quality of the script, acting, and continuity suffer a bit. the movie is disjointed at times.
That said, I really liked it. The movie was factual. It was fair. From what I've read about Henry Ford - and from what Ford has written himself - he was enigmatic.
Henry Ford was a mechanical genius! He was a manufacturing genius! He had the best of intentions. Ford wanted to build a quality car that was affordable for everyone. He wanted to improve the life of the average American. He was also naive, backwards, bigoted, manipulative, and an elitist. He wanted to build cars. His ideas on the theory of constraints and lean manufacturing were decades ahead of his time.
Look at this movie as a psychological study. Ford hated bankers and accountants. He was very cruel to his son Edsel in the belief that Edsel must be tough to run the car company. But Ford based that on his own life experiences. His first two car companies were "taken" from him.
Ford manipulated others, and allowed himself to be manipulated, because that was what he thought was "normal".
The movie is over three hours long (200 minutes). That's rather long for most movies, but not quite long enough for this one. The relationship between Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Thomas Edison is not mentioned at all. And that was fascinating stuff! The "peace ship" was only briefly mentioned. The relationship between Ford and the DODGE brothers was shown, but didn't delve nearly deep enough.
Ford also was an idealist. He didn't always get the results he expected. He thought he was doing the right thing when he cut the workday to eight hours, and doubled salaries from $2.50 to $5.00 per day. What he DIDN'T expect was that thousands of people from around the country would show up at his gates DEMANDING JOBS!
All in all, this is a good movie - worth seeing. Henry Ford, with all of his human imperfections, was a great man. He's one of my heroes.
