Movie Reviews of For a Lost Soldier

Movie Review: Utterly Magnificent
Summary: 5 Stars

You needn't be afraid of watching this. The idea of a soldier having a relationship with a 12 year old boy is quite rightly, disturbing. For the soldier to then disappear on top of it would, in reality, make it indescribably brutal. However, do make the distinction about a film on a subject and the subject itself. That's a wonderful thing about cinema - one can explore ideas which could and should never be explored in reality. The reason I gave the movie 5 is that it indeed made me recall those unforgettable emotions which I felt at the young boy's age - and earlier - and I've not seen another film which has done so, to such an extent. I am reminded that relationships in adulthood would indeed probably benefit rather than suffer if we added to them greater quantities of the elements of the adolescent's concept of love. It is most certainly a film made with all the finesse, beauty and subtlety which one would expect in the finest European cinema. A tale which could quite easily have been one of nihilism, personal devastation and the most irredeemable pessimism is not that at all. It is in fact far from it.

Movie Review: Boy meets Man
Summary: 5 Stars

Being American, it's hard to believe that this movie was ever made. It's even more difficult to believe that it wasn't banned from America all together. I wish this DVD included the making of the film. I would love to have gotten the solider, Walt's, feelings about his love scenes with a young boy. I'd also like to know how the boy's parents felt about letting their son be kissed, stroked, and seemingly made love to by an adult man. While it is uncomfortable to watch, it is, at the same time, a terrific film. The young boy, Jeroen, goes through an awful lot in this movie. His whole life is torn apart. It's no wonder he would find comfort in the arms of a kind solider. Many people probably think of Walt as the villain. Did he really fall in love with Jeroen or is he just some sick pervert? Probably neither. At the time Walt meets Jeroen he is also going through his own emotional problems. The two souls meet each other and offer comfort. It is NOT ok for adults to have sex with children. But, for this time and place, it is understandable to how this could happen.

Movie Review: THE BEAUTIFUL STORY OF LOVE AND LOSS!
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie is based on the book "For A Lost Soldier". It is a story of a young boy in the war-time Netherlands, who falls in love with an American soldier.
The director and actors are at their best showing the depths of the characters' feelings. The boy's feelings are beautifully and sharply depicted. This movie is so moving, that I think it is targeted for much broader audience than just the gay community.
I am sure that it is really hard to depict all the psychological moments and to show the personality and inner world of a young boy, who is just growing up but the director succeeded with that.
It is not one of those big budget movies with lots of special visual effects...It is a simple story of first love, exploration of the outside world and building one's own personality...
I would really recomend this movie for anyone who is into good European movies...

Movie Review: Life, love and forbidden memories
Summary: 5 Stars

I found the Film, For a Lost soldier so intriguing I wrote to the Author. I expressed admiration for his honesty and courage to reveal so precious a memory. Modern audiences are quick to condem any story having to do with man/boy love. American filmmakers fear the subject and would never risk their purse or the feminine mob. Foreign filmakers courageously venture into this forbidden area. This movie teases at the factual encounter, yet hints at the lonelyness of both the young solder and even younger boy. It's difficult to understand their emptiness, but not their need. Detractors express contempt while sighing secretly. Compassionate humanists will allow young boys to recall these sentimental encounters as first love. The film, the director and the actors deserve fullsome praise indeed.

Movie Review: Forbidden love and youthful memories
Summary: 5 Stars

The Film For A Lost Soldier has established itself as a classic. Based on the autobiography of Rudi van Danzi who writes of his early experiences in war torn Europe. He shares his boyhood and how he was separated from his family, sent to the dutch countryside for safety. A lonely, shy youth, he shares the freedom of his liberated country with Canadian soldiers. One of which realizes the boy's 'special' loneliness and befriends him. In the process, the two share a brief forbidden love, establishing the later adult memories which Danzi uses to revitalizes his depleted inspiration. Seen by some, as perverted, the film is nevertheless readily accepted by many others as a heartwarming and sympathetic view of youthful homosexuality. The author, director and actors earn fulsome praise. ****
