Movie Reviews of For Whom the Bell Tolls

Movie Review: Bad Hemingway Karaoke
Summary: 3 Stars

I love the passion in this film! Always! Made in the year o' my birth.('43) (Still) This film kills Fascists! Now more than ever, despite its and our, scaredy cat, watered down versions. Great character actors--Akim Tamiroff and his "people" insurgent guerrilla band; Mother Courage, force of Nature, "Pilar", Katina Paxinou, who won the Academy Award for this. And of course, Bergman and Cooper, May and December, blue eyes, Rushing mountain stream, snowbound Love in Bomber Jacket. "I'll hold the legs of the machine gun..Roberto!" They move the earth! But the soundtrack sucks! It's barely audible in places. Bad lipsynch! And we need those words! Now more than ever! They still "Tolls"...

Movie Review: this mediocre adaptation DEMANDS to be seen for the great performance by katina paxinou
Summary: 3 Stars

literary adaptations can be quite overblown and this is no exception. gary cooper and ingrid bergman (looking stunning) give performances which neither could have been very proud of: more wooden than pinocchio. but the supporting parts are excellent, notably akim tamiroff, and more notably katina paxinou, the legendary greek stage actress who herein gives one of the finest performances ever seen on screen. paxinou made only a handful of other motion pictures, and none so memorable as this, but for this alone she deserves to be called one of the greatest of film actresses. apart from that the movie is way too long and unimpressive.

Movie Review: Hard to Pinpoint
Summary: 2 Stars

The most annoying part of the mvie is the casting. Robert Jordan is supposed to be a young blonde man, in his late 20's about, and Maria is supposed to be a 19 year old Spanish girl. Obviously, the movie missed that. The other actors fit farely well, but a lot of the accents were horrible.

Also, the book always seemed to somehow use the love between Maria and Robert as a subplot. Robert's conflict with Pablo was just as important. The movie, however, is purely a love story. Overall I thought the book was decent, but slow moving. The movie was worse. Almost 3 hours of nothing.

On a final note, to the person who said Jordan should be showing some signs of pain, and that it's ridiculous that he's so calm, read the book. His nerve is severed from the break. Can't feel a thing.

Movie Review: hard of hearing
Summary: 1 Stars

This movie moved me to turn it off after an excruciatingly boring 20 minutes -- a complete waste of time and money.
