Movie Review: Do you know what the definiton to "fool's gold" is?
Summary: 3 Stars
Do you know what the definition of fool's gold is? According to the dictionary the definition for fool's gold is: "any of several minerals, especially pyrite and chalcopyrite, sometimes mistaken for gold." Pay close attention to the last part of the description "sometimes mistaken for gold". I guess by naming this film Fool's Gold the screenwriters were trying to be honest: This film may look good (two big stars and a treasure hunt!) but it is not. Still it manages to be reasonably entertaining.
Benjamin Finnegan (played by Matthew MacConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (played by Kate Hudson) are getting divorced after spending several years in the Caribbean and Bahamas searching for a massive Spanish treasure from the 1700s worth $500 million. Once the divorce is finalized they go their separate ways only to unexpectedly find themselves on the same boat of a multi-millionaire father (played by Donald Sutherland) with a daughter who is some kind of actress/celebrity. Tess is a stewardess, Benjamin (referred to as Finn) is seeking financing for another attempt at treasure searching. In no time at all both Tess and Benjamin talk the millionaire into the search. What follows is a formulaic quest for treasure that somehow reunites the "passion" between Finn and Tess. Oh and I forgot to add there is a villain in the mix a rapper named BigBunny.
As I have said before I could complain about plenty of things in this film, but this is plain and simple blissful entertainment, something to lighten your day or you can relax with after a long day. Anyone expecting more will be disappointed.
I don't think IMDB.com poster, herter, could have not summed it up better: "Well, I am getting ready to be entertained with popcorn and Diet coke watching a light hearted and fun flick. I don't want to be preached about morality, justice, green, war or politics."
