Movie Reviews of Flight of the NavigatorMovie Review: DVD Replaces VHS Summary: 5 Stars
This is a story about an eight-year-old boy, a space-ship and time travel. That is the easy part. The government is involved. They have the space ship for awhile in the beginning. It soon develops that they actually had it in the middle, not the beginning. It gets pretty tangled up. It was pretty tangled up before anybody realized that anything was wrong. By the time we get to the end, or what seems like the end, it seems like things will never get straightened out. The boy can go home but not at the right time ... not anywhere near the right time. The right time, of course, was back in the middle where everything started. It might be possible to take him home to the right time, but can an 8-year old human survive the trip "backwards" ? It's a long shot. Should he risk it ? I'm sure this sort of thing would never be allowed "today". It's a classic Sci-Fi tale for dreamers of all ages.
Movie Review: Wonderful for kids, just need an adult there the first time or two Summary: 5 Stars
We watched this for the first time the other day. I had seen reviews in the past and had the impression that this was not a happy story (and certainly, the beginning is difficult, but with a little parental presence and reassurance this is something even a 6-year-old can handle easily).
Yes, the beginning is sad, but it is also well-done; the boy is convincingly vulnerable, though the medical-research side (especially once he ends up in the hands of NASA) is somewhat far-fetched.
The last part of the move is a truly enjoyable romp that quickly overrode all the fear of the first half. The spaceship is well done, and the interactions between the boy and the ship's computer (voiced by Paul Reubens, who sounds quite Pee-Wee-esque toward the end) are wonderful.
My six-year-old says this is "favorite movie ever."
Movie Review: A Great Family Movie That Holds Up Over Time Summary: 5 Stars
I remember really enjoying this movie when it first came out. We've watched so many animated movies lately that it was time to watch live action again. My kids, ages 6 and 11, had never watched Flight of the Navigator. When I showed them the box, they were not impressed. "Is it animated?" "No." "Yuk." I said, "Give it a try." They were not excited at all to watch it but as soon as it started, they didn't want me to turn it off. It kept them happy til the end when they said, "Is it over already?"
It is a fun family movie, set in the late eighties. David, the main character and the navigator is great and plays his role well. The spaceship's robotic character, Max, is funny, witty and insightful.
My kids really liked this and it is a great movie to watch as an adult too.
Movie Review: Delivery from Phaelon! Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD has taken forever to finally get here! This film, along with "Return to Oz" (Faruzia Balk), "Cloak & Dagger" (Dabney Coleman, Henry Thomas) and "Condorman" (Michael Crawford..yes, THAT Michael Crawford) are my favorite 80's movies, and extremely high on my all-time film favorites list. Plot summary: Kid from mid 80's falls into ravine, wakes up 13 years later to find his life and world changed. At the same time, NASA finds a downed almond-shaped, silver spaceship. We find out the kid and the ship are connected, NASA is P.O'ed, and the kid becomes The Navigator, the only source of info the ship has to reach it's home planet as well as re-deliver it's alien-fauna cargo. Awesome designs of the ship, great solid film! (Cute pufmarrin, odd Pee-Wee Herman choice for the 'bot...)
Movie Review: Wonderful film! Summary: 5 Stars
When I spotted this on the sales rack, my jaw dropped. Though in hindsight it may sound just plain silly, for some reason it just never occurred to me that this movie would ever be available for sale in any format. I absolutely loved this movie when I first saw it on television, and then never saw it again, but never forgot it. Some scenes from the movie were so memorable they have played in my mind many times in the years since. I loved the wisecracking and playful, endearing alien robot. For some reason the scene where they're travelling back through time, that particular scene's really stuck in my mind over the years. I immediately ordered it from Amazon.com, and am absolutely delighted to have it now in my collection. This is the kind of movie that can be watched again and again.
