Movie Reviews of FitzcarraldoMovie Review: Bewitchingly different. Summary: 5 Stars
If you're in the mood for something other than the usual mind-numbing garbage being churned out by Hollywood, this film should fit the bill nicely. Absolutely stunning in its realism, the location shooting takes second place only to Klaus Kinski's moving portrayal of a character that seems to walk a razor-thin line between frenetic madness and simple genius, much like the real-life actor himself. My favorite scene occurs when the steamboat is moving down the river, and Kinski and crew begin to hear, coming from the depths of the rain forest, the war chants of the hostile Indians. Kinski cooly responds by playing a record of operatic legend Enrico Caruso. You can't help but have a flashback to the 'dueling banjos' scene from "Deliverance". This film is so bizarre, but yet so refreshingly different, you'll be left scratching your head and wondering why you enjoyed it.
For good, but short and to-the-point reviews, read those by Tony V. Padilla and Grigory's Girl.
Movie Review: Obsession and dreams in the surreal beauty of the Amazon. Summary: 5 Stars
A riveting film set in the surreal beauty of the Amazon. Fizcarraldo is about obsession, motivation, will, and the realities that block the realization of our dreams -- or is it the dreams that block the realization of our reality?Fitzcarraldo (an amazing performance by Klaus Kinski) is obsessed with bringing Grand Opera to the jungle and having Caruso himself open the premiere of a new opera house. The only problem is he hasn't the money to do it. So he schemes up a plot to get rich by mining rubber trees in an untapped and dangerous region of the jungle. His contagious madness and determination are unflappable as he and his crew attempt the impossible. Anchor Bay has been giving Werner Herzog the deluxe treatment for his DVD releases -- picture quality is excellent and the director's commentaries on this (and "Nosferatu") are manna to Herzog fans like myself.
Movie Review: Who Is the Most Obsessed Person? Summary: 5 Stars
This was the big question after viewing this film. Was it the character of Fitzcarraldo played by Klaus Kinski who insisted on hauling his ship over a mountain to try and realize his dreams or Werner Herzog, the filmmaker, who insisted on doing the same so his movie would be authentic in every way? Let's just say that both men, fictitious and real, are about as obsessed as people could be and in need of the strongest OCD Rx in existence. However, the imagery is gorgeous and haunting and Kinski himself is ethereal and fleeting before us here. Is it better or worse than "Aguirre, the Wrath of God?" I can't answer that. Neither film could have been made by anyone other than the Herzog-Kinski duo and come out looking and feeling like this. I can't imagine not seeing both films and being mesmerized throughout.
Movie Review: A wonderful movie. One of the best I've seen. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic movie. It's not like any other movie I've seen. It has an unusual story, beautiful scenes from the Amazon, beautiful music and Klaus Kinski is fantastic in the lead part, a man who is obsessed by his detemination of building an opera house in the Amazonas, even if it means having to pull a big boat over a mountain. His extreme determination, the natives and the beautiful scenes of the movie makes it so fascinating. And the fact that they actually did pull the boat over the mountain to make the movie, instead of making it in a studio.I can almost promise you'll love the movie. It's a very fascinating movie, on my top ten list. If you ever get a chance to see this movie in a theater, do so, it's even more fascinating than seeing it on a TV screen.
Movie Review: Visual madness Summary: 5 Stars
Herzog, recalling the shooting of the movie said that the Indians were so scared of Kinski's hysterical bouts of anger they offered to kill him... They were dead serious about it. Nothing in this movie is fake, it 's over two hours of unnerving madness spiralling into cathartic self-destruction. Kinski wasn't supposed to hold the role, in fact the shooting started with another actor (and Mick Jagger!) who got sick and had to renounce. But of course the movie would not have been the same without him, maybe it wouldn't have been at all, for Herzog's madness had to be matched by the cast. This movie is not meant as light entertainment but its superhuman quality makes for a fascinating viewing. A super-production, if this word means anything.
