Movie Reviews of Fired Up (Unrated Version)Movie Review: Another "Easy A" For Director Will Gluck Summary: 5 Stars
If you're going to buy a movie on DVD - it had better hold up to countless repeat viewings. You'd think by the packaging and premise - this was yet another knockoff of American Pie. It is quite the opposite. It is funny without being moronic, it is sexy without being raunchy, it plays to the ultimate male fantasy without reducing its women to softcore cliches.
Credit first and foremost director Will Gluck (Easy A) who like Judd Apatow before him, proves the adage that if you fail in TV, you can thrive in the movies. Gluck created a wonderful sitcom that died on Fox called The Loop. He brings that same smart, snappy energy to Fired Up with Loop alums Eric Christen Olsen and Philip Baker Hall. The lead-cast is engaging and super sharp with the improv (hence no real writer is credited), but it's the support cast that steals the show: in particular David Walton takes the cliche role of D-bag boyfriend to almost Dr. Evil heights of deliciousness, and his Chumbawumba-serenading henchmen help create the best road trip singalong since Wayne and Garth tackled Queen. Same goes with Adhir Kalyan (Rules of Engagement) who is so tightly wound, it is a joy to watch him unravel. John Michael Higgins tops all of his Christopher Guest movie master-performances with his hysterical Coach Keith.
Fired-Up holds up on repeat viewings because it reveals new layers each time you play it. The dialogue crackles like Aaron Sorkin without the smugness. The cast of seasoned comedy pros is also one of the sexiest ever assembled. The characters are so fresh and honest, you just want to hang with them again and again.
Fired-up is quickly catching up with Heathers and Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the John Hughes catalog among the films I have watched a dozen times in a row without ever getting bored.
