Movie Review: Tense story of repression & artistic creation of period
Summary: 4 Stars

I am generally not naturally drawn to period pieces, but as I am generally interested in seeing how lesbian characters are portrayed on screen through the decades, I finally watched this this weekend. The film was a bit long and the pacing slow in parts, but overall the story was well developed and executed. The setting, sets and costumes were beautifully done. The two leads boldly played the two characters, and communicated the taboo that was their relationship as well as the struggle they experienced in overcoming their own restrictions and repression of the time. I have never read the book, but it appears that the screen adaptation was faithful, at least, in the impact it had, to the book. The two parts of the film worked well in creating the mindset of each character for me, and allowed me to focus on one possibility of the chain of events, at a time. It also felt more epic because of this style of storytelling. While the story was detailed, and relatable for me, the leads sometimes overacted, which was a bit distracting for me. It was the story itself, however, that was complex and attractive to me, and ultimately I enjoyed the shock and awe that the plot provided.

Movie Review: As always, good until you read the book
Summary: 4 Stars

So, I really loved the book, Fingersmith, which my partner hadn't read when we picked up this movie. Obviously, Sarah Waters was going through more than some "rough seas" when she wrote the book, and as such, it's hard to capture that raw emotion on film. My partner absolutely loved the movie, and watched it 3 times over. She is also the kind of person who will not watch a L&O episode over again, 'cause she hates repeats, but she loved this movie. I can see the appeal, but since I read the book first, I just wasn't as... satisfied with the movie. I highly recommend it as a stand-alone, though. Les movies these days are so cliche, and it's nice to have a breath of fresh air. I just also recommend reading the book... after you've had your fill of the movie.

Movie Review: Fingersmith
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this film after buying another on the 'people who bought that sometimes buy this' kind of link. My original purchase was of a DVD called 'Tipping the Velvet' which was based on a book by Sarah Waters. I had seen the original of this when it was screened as a TV mini-series and very much enjoyed it.
Now to the Fingersmith DVD. This film claims to be based on the same book and the synpsis is similar. Other than this there is no similarity in the two films.
Fingersmith has a completely different plot and though it is a good film I cannot see how the makers can claim a link to the original book.
There are some outstanding performances in this film especially by Imelda Staunton.
A good film and worth the time watching it.

Movie Review: Convoluted 2nd Half Mars Otherwise Perfect Production
Summary: 4 Stars

Another tantilizing lesbian-esque victorian sizzling story with a great plot, outstanding performances, and superb BBC production values. Great adaptation from the acclaimed novel. Only drawback is that everything you thought to be true is disintegrated in the second episode--which is fine, in terms of great plot twists and accentuating betrayal, but it gets a bit convoluted and choppy at the end, plus the empathy and desire we're lured into thinking in the first half dissolves in the second. Also, conclusion is unsatisfying--too contrived and not enough passion. Still, overall a landmark production for a fabulous and multi-talented writer. A must-have for any collection, to be sure.

Movie Review: Dickenstein
Summary: 4 Stars

It's Dickens on steroids. But old Victorian Charles would have sooner slashed his wrist before publishing a story like this. No kidding, it reminds me a lot of a Dickens tale, except of course for the taboo parts and graphic filming. Very nicely done, really keeps you guessing. Strong performances by the lead characters within an intricately woven tale. But a little too dark, complicated, and soapy for other than serious drama fans. And obviously not intended for children.
