Movie Reviews of FfolkesMovie Review: A very underappreciated political-thriller Summary: 4 Stars
This 1980 Roger Moore film shows that he could act outside of his James Bond persona. His role as the as Ffolkes --- leader of a band of private anti-terrorist firm --- is as anti-Bond as anything he has ever done. Anthony Perkin's as the main villain is adequate and sometimes his Norman Bates persona seeps through the facade, but not enough to distract.
This film is all Roger Moore. His woman-bashing, cat-loving, cold-blooded, bearded anti-terrorist expert is one of the better characters I have seen on film. All the traits shown initially in Moore's character should make him unlikable, but in the end his character becomes the most intriguing and likable of the bunch. The scenes concerning the negotiations with the terrorists and the plan to retake the off-shore refineries is handle ably and there's not too much unnecessary plot threads to clutter the story. A very good film and very underappreciated as the years go by
Movie Review: Good entertainment "like ye good ole days." Summary: 4 Stars
This movie is a small gem: great characters, unusual scenario, and a Roger Moore absolutely in top shape going against his classic debonaire role. The plot wants a group of no-good guys hijack an oil rig and to planet bombs on a second one... Heck, it doesn't really matter: just watch this movie for Roger Moore, Anthony Perkins and James Mason. You won't be disappointed.
Movie Review: Irresistible Action Summary: 4 Stars
Moore enjoys himself with this portrait of a prickly underwater expect who takes on hijackers who've taken over a North Sea oilrig. The picture isn't dazzling, but it's lean and enjoyable, expertly helmed by Andrew McLaglen with a sold cast. Perkins also enjoys himself as the heavy. Great stuff.
Movie Review: Hokum - but fun taken with a dollop of salt Summary: 3 Stars
Leave your brains at the door, and bring out the popcorn to have a chuckle at this dated but still fun thriller. Well, let's face it - it's a comedy thriller. Thriller ingredients are all there - an oil platform has been booby trapped and ransom demanded by a sinister terrorist (back when terrorists were just out to get money and there was no need to explain any political agenda..). The government can't risk a naval assault, Admiral James Mason explains.. and so the eccentric Scottish Laird and his private band of ex service men who do odd jobs for Lloyds are brought in to save the day. The thrills are so-so, the production obviously limited in budget to just a few sets, the bridge of the boat and the main office of the platform mostly. The photography is uninteresting and even verging on overexposed.. but what makes this so much fun is Moore, clearly having a ball deconstructing his Bond persona playing the oddball, women hating, cat-loving, whisky guzzling Ffolkes. Perkins is straight forwardly convincing as the hijacker, James Mason says his lines like he is supposed to, and David Hedison takes a break from playing Felix in the Bond movies to fill in here as the Manager of the platform.
Ok, it's nothing special.. there's a distinct lack in this release of any extras or something luxurious such as picture remastering or sound upgrade from the original stereo soundtrack. Basically it shouldn't keep you from anything better you have to do - but it earns its 3 stars in entertainment factor in the joy of seeing Moore having so much fun.
Movie Review: Roger Moore -- cat loving scuba diver!! Summary: 3 Stars
Roger Moore pokes fun at his James Bond image, playing a woman-hating, cat-loving, scuba diving adventurer, asked by the government to help in thwarting a terrorist (Anthony Perkins) bent on destroying an oil rig somewhere in the North Sea. -- This movie is a lot like other adventure movies made in the early 80s that didn't aspire to being the next Bond or Indiana Jones epic. It is cleanly made with enough action to satisfy most movie watchers (who are looking for action). But it is only that ... nothing memorable in the direction, acting or writing. A fun time waster. Moore is fun to watch. He is one of the last big names who really rely more on personality than acting to get him through. We are always watching Roger Moore (he is always Roger Moore in his movies ... even when he's James Bond) and thankfully, Moore is always fun and genial to watch. His character - whose name is ffolkes - loves his cats, does needlepoint to pass the time, and raises his eyebrows in disapproval at the mere mention of women. Plus he has that great knit cap he wears. It's fun and exciting. Not great, but really good.
