Movie Reviews of Festival ExpressMovie Review: What a long strange trip it's been.... Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this film. I was at the last stop of the Festival Express, Calgary. I suppose my judgment may be somewhat clouded by my fond memories of seeing all these fabulous musicians way back then but I really enjoyed the film's performances, the train scenes, the Canadian countryside rolling by as the backdrop to this never repeated gathering of musicians. I think it really captured the feel of the times.Hard to believe it's nearly 35 years since the Festival Express rambled across the country but I am very grateful to Ken Walker for putting it together in the first place and, secondly, to all the people who worked for years to finally bring this footage out of the film cans it languished in for decades. Bravo and Thank-you Very, Very Much!
Movie Review: A Personal Treat Summary: 5 Stars
In 1970 I was a 18-year-old Montana farmboy and a big fan of the "culture" of the era. A friend and I (with very little money) drove from Great Falls to Calgary and caught the Festival Express Concert. Our psychedelic days were yet to come, so we were fueled by 190 proof Everclear mixed with the warm iron-tasting water of that stadium in Calgary.
Yeah, it was a terrific day and this DVD captures it all well enough. Sure wish there were more performances remaining of this event and I have always grieved that many of these performers had such abbreviated lives. Buy this DVD and celebrate what we have remaining, 'cause the likes of Janis aren't coming around often enough. Almost forgot: Peace.
Movie Review: A,mazing Summary: 5 Stars
Festival Express is one of the greatest music movies I have ever seen. It is up there with The Last Waltz and A Hard Days Night. It is an amazing documentary about the wild train trip across Canada taken by members of The Band, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, etc... My friends and I saw it its opening night in Rochester and absoutly loved it. We sat in the back row and sang along to songs like "Casey Jones" and "I Shall be Released". It the perfect movie if you are looking for "footage" of Rick Danko, Janis, and Jerry Garcia since the majority of scenes offstage evolve around those three. I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone and I cant wait to order it for myself!
Movie Review: Priceless moments captured on film Summary: 5 Stars
This was a great film. I'm a younger dude, born in the eighties but I've known the songs and all the people before having the pleasure to see this movie. I liked the performances on stage particularily the last concert with most everyone on stage at once. The jamming scenes on the train when everyone is zonked on psychedelics were very cool and interesting to see candidly up close. My absolute favorite part of the movie was without a doubt Buddy Guy and his band on stage. Wow! Awesome! I loved all the music on this film but that funky, bluesy soul just has a tendency to hit me in my soul. He is the man of the film from that one performance!
Movie Review: Love Train Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is possibly my fave music film! Everybody on the train was having so much fun!
Also, in the summer of '71 I rode those very same rails on frieght trains. At the time it was sort of national sport in Canada. It was a wild and loose time then. Everyone wanted to be Jack and Neal. The movie just reminds me of some very good times. You can see why no one wanted it to end.
Also the out takes are very good. The best footage of the Dead ever! It shows how important Pig was. After he died I never liked them as much. They were on a real roll then.
The whole tour was a one of kind never to be repeated event.
