Movie Reviews of Festival ExpressMovie Review: Slippin' and uh Slidin'... Summary: 5 Stars
The WOODSTOCK DVD is entertaining and it is also a must-own for music buffs, but it was a travesty that the Band were not seen in the film because they played a terrific set there. On FESTIVAL EXPRESS, the Band finally get the amount of screen time they deserve in films like this (THE LAST WALTZ notwithstanding) but even still, it could have been longer. Why couldn't we have gotten footage of Richard Manuel singing "Tears of Rage" instead of those other two? Anyway, their performances here are great, vocally shaky, but they were beginning to hit their stride. At least we have a live "I Shall Be Released" with Richard, and a ROCKING "Slippin' and Slidin'". As for the other performers, they don't exuberhate as much technical virtuosity and energy as the Band, but the whole thing is worth watching once. Danko survived many trips, but the ones he had on this train looked particularly disorienting--but nonetheless he still picked and sang!
Movie Review: Don't Pass This One Up! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're 50ish and a fan of classic rock-and-roll, this DVD is a sure bet. It's grainy but sharp and the sound is top notch. Great concert camera work and beautiful color for a 1970 road show. The scenes on the train provide some very insightful looks of what band life on the road was like back then.
I just played it on my 20" computer monitor with stereo sound and it has overwhelmed me. I have no doubts it will play beautifully on my 70" home theater and the DTS 5.1 surround sound will be heavenly. If you are Canadian, like me, it's an added bonus to see some shots of Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary in the background.
Janis Joplin is in true form and sings some of her best. It's one of the main reasons I bought this and I'm not disappointed.
Don't cheat yourself out of a memorable DVD....you'll be playing this one more than once!
Movie Review: Peace Train Summary: 5 Stars
This documentary is one of the best of its kind. It seemlessly works in great quality concert footage with an amazing story line of the Festival Express in the glory of 1970. This is really something you won't get in most music documentaries; actual close up footage of Jerry, Bob, Janis, and Rick Danko of the Band all jammin' together on a train through Canada. The train footage is what did it for me. It's priceless stuff, like Buddy Guy and his band playin' the blues( horns and all) on a train with the Dead, Janis, an the Band. The film itself couldn't have been done much better, except for the fact that it leaves you wanting more. This is a great buy and a must for any fan of any or all of the artists in the movie. Serious document of 1970 music history gold!
Great extra concert performances too!
Movie Review: Flash From The Past Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely loved the Festival Express, having seen Janis Joplin and Big Brother & the Holding Company at a free (yes, FREE) concert in San Francisco at Fisherman's Wharf in the mid 60's. I was a teenager at the time, we heard the band play a song (not knowing who they were) until they started playing DOWN ON ME! Talk about a flash from the past! The DVD gives you a great sense of the era! That was one of the most memorable moments in my life along with experiencing Haight-Ashbury. I'm sure my kids are sick of hearing this story, but not one that many can say they experienced! I'm thrilled Festival Express is available on DVD, even my daughter is a Janis and Grateful Dead fan, et al. She grew up listening to the 60's-70's music and informed me when she saw the DVD while shopping!
Movie Review: It beats Woodstock Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing this film I needed a drink....many drinks. What I had experienced was mind blowing. Seeing many of the greatest rock heroes siting in a train and being themselves. But there is a moment in the film that you realise that this way of living is dangerous... seeing Rick Danko, Jerry Garcia , and Janis singing, playing guitar....having fun makes you realise that live is short. You see a lot of dead people in this movie. But lucky for us there are a few people left to tell the story what happened on that train.
Okay enough talk about dead people....then they were alive and made great music. For me the highlight was "The Band" playing "I shall be released" and Janis Joplin. But what am I talkink about...every second, every song of this movie was great.
