Movie Reviews of Fatso

Movie Review: yikes!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Movie:
Fatso!
My review is brief; the film is a funny and sensitive, Black Comedic, satirical, Romantic, love story, focused on Italian America culture and food.
The cast is mostly Italian, including the director. Dom Deluise is incredible and the Food Junky Splurge scene is at the same time both hilarious and sad. So if you are Italian American, or of any ethnic group which appreciates the food, the culture and humor of same, this is a hilarious and yet poignantly, sensitive, ethnic film classic.

Ann Bancroft, is an Italian American, actor/director and is also related to the late, great, Oak Park Illinois architect; Frank Lloyd Wright.

Movie Review: Ann Bancroft's love story
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an endearing story about love, families, and coping. Ann Bancroft wrote, directed, and played a supporting role in this wonderful film about a man's search for acceptance and love. Ms. Bancroft tenderly portrayed each character as if they were her own family members. What I love about the film is how strongly I identify with the main character. It is a comedy and a love story. My friend and I, who are always on a diet, watched this together in the 80's when it was new. Twenty years later, we still refer to each other as our "chubby checker" when we need help. I am so happy to have this on DVD to add to my collection. Ms. Bancroft left us a splendid gift.

Movie Review: Disregarded Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this movie--perhaps it's my predominantly Italian background. "Fatso" is the closest a movie has ever gotten to what the urban Italian-American is like. I don't think a lot of folks will get the humor-it's of a very special brand. This is the type of film where even the crudeness works for it.

It's also one of a kind, since this was the first mainstream American film whose director and DOP were women. Anne Bancroft shows her real talent here as Antoinette Fasano (DeLuise's sister)-a woman of intense emotion. The storyline is a little thin but the acting and script are great, hilarious and first rate.

Movie Review: My Favorite Comedy Film
Summary: 5 Stars

They must hurry and put this out on DVD! I have recommended this film to countless friends/family as THE funniest 'slice of life movie about a typical NY Italian family'. Some of the lines and situations will definitely hit home with ANYone who has struggled with dieting. "How'd you like to stuff THAT into a jelly donut" or "June love his corn"....priceless. Dom D is so lovable and charming that I never even noticed he was overweight. And the Chubby Checkers? That entire scene when they get so passionate discussing their food faves while drinking hot water with lemon ("do you have any honey?") is the best!

Movie Review: Warm hearted and entertaining movie
Summary: 5 Stars

It's hard not to feel good after watching this very funny and basically warm hearted look at amiddle aged Italian man confronting his love for food that's been ingrained in his character since ealiest childhood. For anyone raised in an Italian-American family the characterizations will ring true. The main character played by Dom Delouise is not really that fat but his cousin's premature death inspires him to attempt to give up the foods he loves and the results are very funny. The film is really kind spirited and inoffensive despite the title.
