Movie Reviews of Fargo (Special Edition)Movie Review: Minnesota Nice? NOT!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are reasonably intelligent, have a sense of humor and are film-savvy at all, PLEASE ignore the "why is this film popular?" reviews and see it for yourself. This is a modern classic, filled with dark humor, an intriguing plot and wonderful performances. Dark humor an satire are often lost on people, but if you're the type of person who generally "gets it" (you know who you are) you'll probably end up watching "Fargo" more than once. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't "get" this film's realism, dark humor, subtle wit, and sensitivity. The tenderness shown to way-pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson by her concerned husband on those bitter Fargo mornings presents us with a stark contrast to the utter callousness of the weasly Jerry Lundergaard towards his hapless wife. Brilliant performances by all, especially Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi. I will never look at a wood chipper in the same way again.
Movie Review: A Bloody Confection from the Coen Brothers Summary: 5 Stars
Fargo is a wonderful piece of modern crime film making. The script is clever, suspenseful, violent and very, very funny. It's greater success hinges on the cast and the wonderful performances. Without this cast, it could have become a very different film. Not enough can be said about the perfection that is McDormand in this film. Her potrayal of Margie G., police woman and midwest pregnant housewife is a revelation. While she actually has les screen time than some of the others, she creates a character that will forever be remembered in American cinema. A true triumph. William H. Macy - who also deserved an Oscar- is a stressed-out, comically twitching raw nerve. Just superb. Buscemi and Stormare are the perfect dopey villains and Presnell as Macy's father-in-law might be the most villainous of all.
Beautifully filmed and acted, it is a true gift to the audience from the Coen brothers and deserved all its acclaim and more.
Movie Review: "I'm working with ya here!" Summary: 5 Stars
This is simply one of the greatest movies ever created. The Coen brothers have a real knack for crafting stories centered around hopelessly idiotic characters. This film is certainly no exception. Practically everybody (with the obvious exception of Frances McDormand's wonderful character) is stuck in their own one-track frame of mind. Granted that in most films, this would really limit the character scope. In this film it oddly serves to move the plot along perfectly. Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty of posts about the film itself, probably much better than mine! If you're a fan of the Coen Brothers, this DVD is for you!
If you already have the previous DVD release, then I would only recommend this special edition if you're a die-hard Coen Bro.s fan. For anyone who hasn't seen this masterpiece? I say get which every edition you come across! The extras are really only for true Coen Bro.s Fans, and cinephiles.
Movie Review: A remarkable Noir! Summary: 5 Stars
Fargo is a remarkable film Noir spiced with this touch of genius of the Coen brothers, whose acidic gaze about the nasty behavior of the human being blends the cynical style of the black British humor, admirably built for marvelous vignettes and slow paced script that will keep you amazed from start to finish. But what I really admire in this film is the conceptual sharpness around his personages turn around. You may notice certain referential affinities respect his opera prima "Blood simple" but gifted with major musculature.
Nothing is like it seems and as you may guess the initial plan has nothing to do with the twist of fate that will appear before us.
Frances Mac Dormand won a more than deserved Academy Award with this towering acting.
One of these jeweled gems of the Coen brothers, that you and me are use to appreciate from their creative muse.
Movie Review: great movie!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I want to clarify some comments people made below that this movie insults Minnesotans. I lived in Minnesota for many years. This movie is really a VALENTINE to Minnesota. It has so many in-jokes about Minnesotans beyond the accents, even down to the talk about Honeywell, the neighbors' talk about the weather, and the kind of food Marge eats at the restaurant. It's really quite brilliant in putting all the idiosyncracies of that area of the country on film with only a little bit of exaggeration (yes, some Minnesotans do talk like that). In doing so, it's laughing with Minnesotans, rather than at them, and portrays main characters such as Marge and her husband as loving and kind rather than stupid and shallow.See the movie for the brilliant writing and acting. Macy's portrayal of a man imploding is wonderful.
