Movie Reviews of Fargo (Special Edition)

Movie Review: One of the Greatest Films of All Time
Summary: 5 Stars

"Fargo" written by Eathan and Joel Coen and directed by Joel Coen is easily one of the best films ever made. It's got a great script, with witty dialouge recited perfectly by it's great cast which is directed perfectly by Coen. The film states that it is based on a true story (Both Coen brothers later admitted that it never took place) and begins with Jerry Lundergaard (William H. Macy) walking into a diner to find two crooks Carl (Steve Buscemi) and
his associate (Peter Stormare, Prison Break). After a long conversation about a misunderstanding of the time (some brilliant dialouge here) the plan is set in motion. Jerry wants Carl and his associate to kidnap his wife and with the ransom money paid by her father they will split it and go their separate ways. Seems easy enough. About 30 minutes into the film we meet Margie (Frances McDorman, who won an Oscar for this performance). A cop who begins investigating the murder of a state trooper and some passerby's, which happens to be connected to the kidnapping. The story is very smooth, this film is quite litterally perfect. I've watched this film several times trying to find something wrong with it to no avail. Buscemi, McDormand, Macy, and Stormare are brilliant and perfectly cast. Buscemi, in my oppinion, is the highlight. Both his voice and movement work so well as the character Carl.
The dialouge is some of the best Coen dialouge I've heard in a while. If you're a DVD collector, you need this movie. A+

Movie Review: Still Extremely Entertaining A Decade Or So Later
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw it the first week it was out for rental 11 years ago and have enjoyed it ever since. In fact, I probably enjoy this more each time I view it. It's a sick movie, though, make no mistake about that. However, it holds a strange fascination, probably because of the odd characters.

This is NOT a true story as indicated in the movie. That's a lie. It's a fictional kidnapping-turned into murder story with a few bloody scenes, lots of profanity (most of it by Steve Buscemi) and a pure "black comedy."

Both William H. Macy and Frances McDormand have some wonderful facial expressions along with their accents. Those two and Buscemi are the lead characters and all three "are a trip." Macy is hilarious; the best character in here, in my opinion. It's also the best role, I assume, ever for McDormand who was never a big star before - or since - this movie. Her character in here, "Marge Gunderson," elevates this movie from just another modern-day crime movie, to an original.

Add to the mix of weird characters some equally-bizarre music (slow violins) and solid cinematography, and you have an "original," the best film the Coen Brothers have ever made and maybe the rest roles ever for the three main actors. This DVD gives it justice, too - it looks great! The only thing better would be a Blu-Ray release which, I assume, we'll get some day.

Movie Review: BRILLIANT
Summary: 5 Stars

Just like "The Big Lebowski" this movie is the one you can watch over and over again, many-many times and you won't get bored. Early works of Coen brothers like "Blood Simple" and "Miller's Crossing" were very good, but "Fargo" is an absolute pinnacle of their career to my opinion. Because what they are doing now is not awful of course but they are regressing for sure.
At first glance "Fargo" is a small movie - small cities, small people, small problems. But it's the Coen's genius that turned it all into a brilliant, smart, ironic and inimitable masterpiece. I've never been to Minnesota but to me the film seems so vivid. It's one of those rare occasions when you forget you're watching actors play. Here you watch real people who don't play at all - they live on screen. And they live funny. Every character here is so laughable it's hard to understand whether filmmakers laugh at them or pity them. And let's not forget it's a criminal film. This is one of the Coen brothers' gifts - to make serious funny and absurd.
Dialogs are just awesome, I can't recall a movie which could compare to "Fargo" concerning dialogs. Maybe just "Pulp Fiction".
Definately a piece of cinematic art. Besides a very good edition with interesting documentary in bonus features.

Movie Review: "One was kinda funny lookin'"
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a movie that could only come from the Coen brothers. It's histarical in a "I can't believe I just laughed at THAT?" kinda way. Some of the films more disturbing scenes are the funniest and that's what makes this film so great. So Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is hard up for cash, and he needs it quickly so he comes up with a scheme to hustle his father-in-law and his company (he works for his father-in-law...some used car dealership) out of a TON of cash. The only problem is that his scheme involves two dimwit thugs, Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stomare) the silent deadly type & Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi is his best role ever) the nerotic paranoid type, to kidnap his wife Jean (Kristin Rudrad) and hold her for ransom. Things only get sticky when a few people turn up dead because Gaear has a trigger finger and then we have pregnant cop Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand in a hilarious role) sticking her nose in to find the answers that lead back to Jerry. Hilarity ensues and it just keeps getting better and better. The whole scene where the thugs kidnap Jean is worth the price of the film right there. With oscar worthy performances and a script tighter than most...this is a film that stands out as perfect. Loved every minute of it.

Movie Review: Excellent film
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie without knowing really what it was about. After watching it, I saw that it was one of my favorite movies. Fargo is an excellent film blending comedy and drama, and contains an Oscar winning actress, Frances McDormand. She trully was excellent in the movie but I loved William H Macy in the movie. It is inspired by a true story in which a car salesman, played by William H. Macy, who has his wife kidnapped so that his rich father in law will give a ransom which will go to him. He thinks it's just a really simple plan but it ends up going terribly wrong. MCDormand plays a police officer trying to find out the truth behind this. The story goes from being hilarious to absolutely tragic.
What makes this movie the best though is the accents. The movie takes palce in Minnesota so every character adopts an accent. This makes it in itself hilarious. But, after you laugh at William H. Macy saying "geese" or rehearse what to say to his father in law while putting on a lot of acting, you realize who tragic this true story is once innocent civilians get executed by the kidnappers.
It is a great story and I reccomend it to everyone but especially someone wanting to watch both a comedy and a drama at the same time.
