Movie Reviews of Fargo (Special Edition)

Movie Review: Wintry, tragic, somehow humorous, with excellent performances
Summary: 5 Stars

Fargo is one of the best films of the 1990's. It revolves around a bizzarre kidnapping scheme that unexpectedly leads to murder. Filled with cold settings, quirky characters, and excellent performances, Fargo is an excellent film.

The central characters of the film are an overextended car salesman (William H. Macy), a pregnant police chief (Frances McDormand), and two kidnappers (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare). William H. Macy's character is not a good person, but Macy's excellent performance is able to make us feel his pain. Frances McDormand's character is well mannered, and strong willed, which is great to see in a female character. She definately deserved her oscar for her performance.

Steve Buscemi is great as always. His character is a criminal, but is somewhat likeable. Peter Stormare's character is underrated. His character is a psychopath who hardly ever says anything. His actions show his aggresiveness without even needing to say anything. I would rank his character as one of the best psychopaths, up there with Frank Booth from Blue Velvet and Tommy DeVito from Goodfellas.

The plot is pretty simple, but you still need to pay attention in order to understand it. Part of what I really liked about this movie is how the plot is simple, but the Coen Brothers managed to create a story of kidnapping gone wrong and murder without having an overly complex plot.

The score is very affective. It has a celtic feel to it and expresses the mood of the midwest perfectly.

The way the film is shot resembles Stanley Kubrick's style, as every shot is like a perfectly drawn picture.

I recommend Fargo at all costs. It has a wintry feeling that stays with you hours after you've seen it.

Movie Review: Fargo: "Wow, Daddy" Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Fargo is a truly great modern-classic. Frances McDormand is touching with her old-fashioned values amongst all the violence and greed of the other characters. William H. Macy is able to gain our sympathies, even after all the horrible events that unfold. He wasn't a bad guy, just stupid. Steve Buscemi is hilarious and perfect playing a weasily little man "Wow, Daddy." Peter Stormare is brutal, and very much resembling an angel of death when he walks from his car after the accident. And to think that such cold, introverted people exist among is is chilling. Also, the Coen brothers casting of actors who look average is also very effective, not only in the main roles, but small parts too. The man who tells the police officer information on Steve Buscemi is hilarious in his natural, average demeanor. And instead of picking a conventionally gorgeous woman to be placed in the flipped-over car, the Coen's pick a woman with a kind of average prettiness, that's much more powerful because she is like people we know, and we can see her having a family and friends who would miss her. The music, also, is wonderfully sad and moving. Fargo is not a comedy, but it is a kind of joke, and when watching it one must remember that the Coens are probably laughing at every scene, even if we are not.
Also, the family who thinks Fargo is the worst movie ever, and when discussing bad movies says: "but is it FARGO bad?!?!" must be the biggest bunch of dumbasses in the world. Please stop watching movies, and if that is too much to ask, please, please stop polluting the internet.
But yeah, Fargo is very good. May take a few viewings to appreciate fully, so worth buying definitely.

Movie Review: Should have won the Oscar, brilliant.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the story of Jerry Lundegaard. A hapless car salesman who needs money to repay the money he stole from GMAC. Why did Jerry steal money from GMAC? NO one knows, that is never brought up in the film, and it took me 6 viewings to realize that we never knew why he needed the money; I suppose that is because it is inconsequential to the plot. Jerry hatches a scheme by which he hires two thugs to kidnap his wife. Jerry would then tell his rich father in law about the situation and get the ransom and split it with the thugs. Sounds simple, only everything goes wrong. But through all the mix ups and catastrophes, Jerry never gives up on his plan. He is eternally optimistic that it will work out for him. Through it all you have local Minnesota law enforcement looking into the case and the crime scenes left behind by the 2 thugs. Frances McDormand won an Oscar for her role as Sheriff Marge Gunderson. But by and large, fans of the film believe William H Macy was screwed.

About the DVD: The DVD contains the regular DVD goodies, deleted scenes, trailers and commentary. The two big bonuses are the interview with the Cohen brothers and the documentary "Minnesota Nice". But above and beyond all that there is a trivia track that plays like pop up video through the course of the movie that is addictive. The extras make this great movie even better. If you have the choice of this version or the El Cheapo, do yourself a favor and spend the few extra bucks for the special edition, it is truly special.

Movie Review: We go to Pancakes House!
Summary: 5 Stars

How to describe this film... Honestly, when I first saw it, I didn't get it. However, after watching it again, I got it, and then some! This has to be one of my favorite films of all time, and it is the Cohen's at their best. Fargo is a satire, thriller and comedy all rolled into one fine package.

Plot: Jerry Lundergaard (portrayed perfectly by William H. Macy) is hard up for cash. Working at his father in laws car dealership he concocts a scheme to milk both his father in law and GMAC out of a TON of cash. However, the plan depends on the kidnapping of his wife, to be carried out by two of the most inept kidnappers of all time (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare). Hot on the trail is Francis McDormand, who received an Oscar for her portrayal of pregnant Sheriff of Brainard.

The directing and cinematography are excellent. There are some great shots, especially the scene when Jerry is approaching his car in the snow (it is shot from above). Honestly, this is one of the best directed and best filmed movies I've seen.

The best part of the bonus features is the interview with the Cohens in which they admit this is not really a true story. The funny part is when they (and Wiliam) describe his reaction to hearing about the fact that this isn't a true story, but they were going to say it was. Good stuff.

If you are a fan of the Cohens, or are wondering what is so great about them, watch this film. It should be a part of everyone's collection.
