Movie Reviews of Far From Heaven

Movie Review: Knocking on Heaven's Door
Summary: 5 Stars

"Far From Heaven" is like a perfectly cut cubic zirconium. It looks like a diamond--but it's not. In the same way,"Far from Heaven" is a '50s "women's film" a la Douglas Sirk, but it's not. It's Todd Haynes' homage. Julianne Moore is luminous as a '50s housewife caught between the two men in her life--her beloved husband (Dennis Quaid) and her black gardener whom she befriends (Dennis Haysbert)

"Far from Heaven" is retro with an edge--Dennis Quaid embodies gay issues as the closeted husband. Dennis Haysbert embodies the racial issues of the time that still exist. There's a timelessness, but also a contemporary slant. Dennis Quaid, usually macho,is perfect as the closeted, conflicted husband. Haysbert is wonderful as Moore's wise friend. Julianne Moore is especially poignant and powerful in her portrayal. As a woman, she loses everything due to societal taboos. She becomes a stigmatized divorcee because of her husband's forbidden inclinations; she is isolated once Haysbert says their racial differences are irreconcilable.

"Far from Heaven" is melodrama. It stands as one of Haynes' best works and proof that Moore is one of the great actresses of our time. "Far from Heaven" is celestial!

Movie Review: "PERFECT!"
Summary: 5 Stars

Julianne Moore is one of Hollywood's most underatted actresses. I first discovered her when she was starring on "As The World Turns" and always knew she would be an amazing actress one day. In "Far From Heaven" Juliiane plays a 1950's housewife who has everything a woman would want in the ultra conservative fifties; a handsome husband, two sweet children, and a beautiful home. However, this housewife's idealic life becomes destroyed when she finds out her husband is a closet homosexual.
The performances in this film are flawless and Dennis Quaid does a superb job playing the husband leading a double life. After watching the movie the viewer gets a glimpse as to what gay men actually went through in the 1950's, with leading two separate lives, the married one and the gay lifestyle that they want so much to live.
Julianne Moore would receive an Oscar nomiantion for Best Actress for her role in "Far From Heaven" and the movie was a hit at the boxoffice. Peter Travers says "Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid give the performances of their careers".
The DVD comes with a slew of bonuses including a featurette called "The Making of "Far From Heaven" and commentary with director Todd Haynes.

Movie Review: Visually and Emotionally Riveting
Summary: 5 Stars

Cinematic elements and social themes of the 50's are brought to an astonishing life in this visually stunning and emotionally powerful film. Be it the "old-fashioned" credit sequences, the brilliant score, the cinematography, the dialogue..Todd Haynes has certainly done his homework. And let's not forget the actors involved--Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid, both pulling off amazing performances. I think this is a film many people will be able to relate to--everything LOOKS good from the outside but indoors, it's a different story. Julianne Moore nearly had me crying several times. You can see her slowly beginning to unravel as she continues to try and hold up her appearances while being crushed on the inside. Same goes with Dennis Quaid's character--desperately wanting to be "normal" but finding it harder and harder to fight. I LOVED Dennis Haysbert's character--that is a true friend. To see Moore and Haysbert on screen together interacting, socializing, and sharing a true friendship was very moving..I won't give anything away but what happens between these two is truly heartbreaking. Wow. I could go on and on..just go to Blockbuster and pick it up!

Movie Review: Revisiting the melodrama
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the more daring movies of 2002. It splendidly observes the harshness of oppression in the 1950's. Not many other movie producers have dared this. They return to the long-lost melodrama style with a current twist and a brilliant rebellion of most old fashioned beliefs.

"Far From Heaven" proves that Julianne Moore continues to evolve into one of the greatest actress around. Her emotional Oscar nominated role as a housewife matches perfectly with Dennis Quaid's greatest role of his career as a successful businessman who realizes he's homosexual. Dennis Hayward proves that his acting career has only began as we will be watching more of him many years to come. No actor holds back any necessary emotions for a second.

This screenplay accurately desplicts the life as a minority and their friends. Many people who didn't live that through that time don't realize these incidents happened. The emotional aspects of them symbolize the movie's quality.

If you watch this movie, it may take you two times to appreciate it, but you'll be glad you did. "Far From Heaven" will be a classic.

Movie Review: For all true movie fans
Summary: 5 Stars

An excellent story about a 1950s familiy. It's a story about a way of life, that isn't that much different than the way we live today. When it comes to marriage and children everything has to look perfect, no matter what lies under the surface. That is just what Cathy Whittaker, (Julianne Moore)is doing. Traying to make everything look perfect. She is doing everthing she can to save her marriage after having found out about her husband's " accident ". He's a homosexual. Hush! While fighting for her familiy, she finds herself becoming close to her gardner, who is black. Hush! hello, It's the '50s. What I want to say is that everyone has a secret or two, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise. And, naturally, we hate to be exposed. We fight,'cause that's what life really is about.Haynes did an excellent job by placing the story in the 1950's, becouse much of what the movie is about, was a taboo back then ( it still is...) and it gives the story much more reality!!! Don't miss it.
P.S. Julianne Moore will always be my one and only. She is a godess. Bye and thanks.
