Movie Reviews of Far From Heaven

Movie Review: Not that far from Heaven at all!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the middle of 2003 when I first got this movie I was blown away by all of its beauty, detail, and sense of time and place and character, and I'm still blown away and never get sick of this movie!

Julianne Moore is just PERFECT as a 1950s housewife, and Dennis Quaid is equally as good as a closeted queer. ;) He was robbed at the 2002 Oscars of a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Dennis Haysbert's role is similar to the role he had in Love Field, and I know others have said that already. It's just the truth. I think he's been typecast. And actually, Patricia Clarkson is a vision as Julianne's best friend, even though she's nosey and gossipy and you wanna smack her sometimes, but she's been given a sumptuous role that she, too, is perfect for.

But ... this is how life actually was in the 1950s. And I feel sorry for, and I know you will to, the children in the movie. Basically, the reason that our parents (I'm 23) turned out the way they did is because of the way their parents treated them, and ... you'll just have a better understanding of this concept when you see the movie.

This is one of my favorite movies, and it's destined to be a classic in decades to come. The director and the actors are brilliant. Everything in this movie COMPLETELY works, and it's not often that that happens.

Movie Review: Astounding, moving look at life in general
Summary: 5 Stars

The controversial subjects that have been addressed for years, homosexuality and interracial relationships, are analyzed in the beautifully photographed "Far From Heaven." With career altering performances from the wonderfully dynamic Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid, the film intricately breaks down a seemingly perfect family's demise.
Julianne Moore flawlessly portrays Cathy Whitaker, a seemingly faultless 50s housewife, and Dennis Quaid nails the part of her homosexual husband. From the gorgeous opening sequence to the purposefully colorless ending, the perfect fifties housewifes image is tainted through her budding relationship with her black gardener (superbly played by Dennis Haysbert), and her corporate giant of a husband falls victim to his own demons, resulting in a crack in the surface of the familys image. As time progresses, the crack severs the family completely, and the picture perfect family from the opening sequence become but a memory.
This film is an amazing glance at the prejudices in life, not just in this time era, but at all times. The theme of this movie rings true for the entirety of history. This heartbreaking story is a wonderful addition to anyones collection, movie lover or not; it is breathtaking from all standpoints, and, in my opinion, the best picture of the year.

Movie Review: Blown Away!
Summary: 5 Stars

The plot of the story was incredibly brilliant. A housewife Cathy Whitaker (Julianne Moore) was living in a peaceful environment happily but one day she discovered that his husband was a homosexual. Her own world just seems to be shattered and she tries desperately to recover her husband Frank (Dennis Quaid) from homosexual back to heterosexual. On the other sides, there is a rumor state that she has an affair with his family gardener Raymond Deagan (Dennis Haysbert). Other than that, this movie was all about racism on 50's, etiquette, social events and an overall desire to keep up with the Joneses.

I will not give away the whole story and the ending. If you want to know what happened in the movie, please watch it yourself, and I highly recommend it.

The acting of this movie was superb and fabulous. All the actor and actress did a great job on their own roles especially Julianne Moore, she is amazing.

The director of this movie Todd Haynes was a very talented & intelligence director. He makes the whole movie looks classy & excellent and catches the attention of audience easily. In addition, the costume, scenario and cinematography were extraordinary stunning & spectacular.

I think this movie was one of the best movies of all-time. TWO THUMBS UP!!

Movie Review: FAR FROM HEAVEN is heaven on DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

The joys of cinema are explored in-depth in this movie! From it's Sirk tribute in exquisite production design to the carefully nuanced performances, it's everything a movie-lover could want or ask for. Be warned though - it is made as if it were a 1950s movie, and this means it doesn't move quite as quickly as what modern audiences are used to.

The story is simple, but it's telling is complex. Julianne Moore plays the perfect Donna Reed woman of the 1950s, and underneath her perfect family lies a secret that threatens to pull apart her family. She's so distraught and can only find solace in the humble fine presence of her black gardner. This creates a shockwave in the community that has far-reaching implications for 1950s America.

The whole affair is shot beautifully as a technicolor dream, and on DVD the colors pop just as they did on the big screen. Also here to savor is a Berstein musical score that becomes its own character in the movie. WOW! It's old-style movie magic.

But don't forget the MODERN extras - ANATOMY OF A SCENE, MAKING OF featurette, interview with Todd Haynes and Ms. Moore, and a commentary track! A great value for a great film. 1950s production values, good acting, and lots of extras. This is what DVD was made for!

Movie Review: Heaven Knows She's Miserable Now!
Summary: 5 Stars

What Can I say? Back in 2003 and after leaving the Cinema I was amazed by this piece of art! Good in all the aspects! I am already Todd Haynes fan! And Julianne Moore are so intense in this movie (well, all her movies are intense)!
In the same year I saw The Hours! And the role wich Julianne plays in the two movies are so antagonistic, although in the same decade, the 50s! Here we see a lovely housewife taking care of her children and husband (great Dennis Quaid), organising parties and women meetings. Everything is under control! But as soon as she discovers her husband to be homosexual her life fall to the ground like a castle of cards... Only the comfort she needs - the ONE we all ever need is a true friendship that is given by her gardener (Dennis Haysbert) wich caused tremendous shock in the "world" she lives! Only because the friend is black...
She played so well in both movies! Although I prefer this one! It's dramatic and it's story is different from all we ever expect from a film related with the 50s! The beauty colors of the film, the Elmer Bernstein score evoques the 50s so well... It's perfect! Todd Haynes is apted to film whatever he wants just because he is one of the greatest US directors of the last years!
