Movie Reviews of Fantasia 2000

Movie Review: You're judging this the wrong way...
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so there were some dissapointments, in particular I was disspointed at the opening piece, it didn't close things up right for me. However, one must also realize that this is not one continuous movie, it is a collection of shorts. Different animation teams worked on different pieces, take a look at the credits. There is one segment on this DVD that makes it worth buying, the Firebird. It is the only thing that keeps my Faith in that there are americans that can out-animate Hayao Miyazaki, and I am a huge Miyazaki fan. This is so much better than the other Disney works because it has imagination that you don't get with even Disney's latest and cutting edge works. Also, the animation seems like paintings at times. Okay, it doesn't have all of features of the original compilation, but what were you expecting? This is a great collection in it's own right. The only thing that I would have changed is bringing back the Sorcerer's Apprentice, I wanted to see Night on Bald Mountain. But, who am I to complain.

Movie Review: Just as perfect as it should be, but DVD has one little flaw
Summary: 5 Stars

I have little to say aside from the fact that this film is amazing. I am only writing this review to say one thing, and that regards the DVD edition.

The film is presented in the widescreen format, which is perfect and it makes me happy. However, the film also includes a piece from the original Fantasia. The original Fantasia was made before the cinemascope widescreen process was invented, therefore the piece from the old Fantasia is shown in its original aspect ratio. Which is the way it should be. My only problem with this, however, is that on the DVD, Disney kept the letterbox going through the segment. In other words, the bars are still at the top and bottom, as well as there being bars on the sides, too. It made it look like my TV's picture tube was shrinking. Being as though the segment was originally made in full screen, why doesn't the format switch to that for the duration of the piece? I found it to be rather lame.

Movie Review: The THERAPY!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have FINALLY seen this film and all I can say is that the music and animation are SUPERB...magical and soothing. Unlike Fantasia (1940), the minutes flew by, and I was able to groove to each piece.

The baby whale was such a character! When he/she got lost I nearly cried...but Disney stayed faithful to a love for animals and he was reunited with his family. I also loved the flamingos because they were just FUN. Imagine...a flamingo with a yo-yo?!

Donald and Daisy in "Noah's Ark" was fabulous! I was very moved by their love for each other...I've never seen Donald be so...so connected with real feelings. He hardly got ticked off.

And the grand finale! Wow! What a story...it was beautiful to watch "the firebird" as she created a wonderful spring and fought against the volcano. It was triumphant!

Great job Disney!! I hope there will be another...the animation is stunning.

Movie Review: A Great Sequel!
Summary: 5 Stars

After seeing the first Fantasia, and loving it, I decided to watch Fantasia 2000. It is much shorter than the first, but I actually ended up loving the movie! There are many good pieces in this movie, mine being the Firebird. Some little children might find this piece a little frightening, but I found it beautiful, especially at the end, where there is beauty and renewal. Some other favorites of mine are the Pines of Rome which had gorgeous computer animated backgrounds and characters. I especially like the ending. I also enjoyed the (very) short piece "Carnival of the Animals" finale, and it also is fun to see the Sorcerer's Apprentice, restored and remastered too.

Overall, Fantasia 2000 is (in my opinion) Disney's best sequel, and also one of my favorite Disney movies! Better than the first, and I think everyone will like this movie, if you liked the first one!

Movie Review: An integrated work of art.
Summary: 5 Stars

First the bad news: the introducers such as Steve Martin are annoying and add little to the movie.

But the good is very good. And all the segments are connected to each other and form a integrated work of art -- not just visually, but in terms of ideas. And make no mistake, it is a wonderful piece of art. They arranged some of the music into shorter-than-composed bits? Hey, symphonies do that all the time. The important thing here is the synergy between the sound and the image.

If you can't see what's going on, try watching Seven Brides for Seven Brothers first. That will spur some ideas.

Fantasia 2000 is a perfect example of Disney's best work. It's appropriately rated G, but is filled with so many ideas that people of all ages and backgrounds may enjoy it in many different ways.

Better than the first? No but just as good in its own way.
