Movie Reviews of Fame

Movie Review: Wonderful film of the 80s
Summary: 4 Stars

Fame is a wonderful film by Alan Parker about the struggles that face a group of talented youngsters reaching for their dreams while attending the School of the Performing Arts. The audience may wonder at the end of the film who may actually may succeed but thankfully that is never touched upon.
I love the soundtrack and energy of the film. Each of the stars gets enough screen time without overwhelming the other. The only gripe I may have is the Montgomery McNeil character. You have to admit that it was rather peculiar that he was the only known gay student in a school of the arts. That would be like a lone lesbian in a women's basketball team; it just doesn't make sense. Still, I think we can forgive the producers for that.
I'm not sure if I can say that this film has aged well though. Some of the scenes, especially the dancing in the streets during the title song can be perceived as corny by today's standards. Some of my friends say this film, like Flashdance, is a guilty pleasure. Still, it's a great movie and I highly recommend it.

Movie Review: A couple of comments about previous reviews
Summary: 4 Stars

Hello,
I have not had the opportunity to view the DVD version of Fame yet but I plan to order it, so someday soon! However, I thought it was worth my time to interject on a couple of the reviews that have been posted.
First: one lady commented that this movie was not suitable for her child because of the language and nudity, so it deserved 1 star. Please note that this movie was rated R in the theatre, and is listed as Rated R here on Amazon. How much clearer does one need to be. Rated R MEANS not suitable for children. Do not blame the movie for your poor judgement. Do not use this review in deciding to purchase the DVD.
Second: A gentleman commented that this movie did not contain all of the music from the original stage production. Well, unless I am mistaken, that would be because the movie came first. The musical expanded upon the movie, as did the television show. So please know this when using his review.
Just my two cents on the matter. :)

Movie Review: Good DVD release
Summary: 4 Stars

So finally a movie the caliber of Fame comes to DVD.
I guess if you are here it's because you've seen the movie and wonder if the DVD is worth buying. Just in case: Fame tells the story of a group of students who enter a Performing Acts school in NY. It starts with the auditions and finishes after graduation. Fame has a very good cast, a better script, and even a better soundtrack - featuring of course Irene Cara.
As for the DVD, the picture quality is somewhere from good to very good (no complains, but it won't blow you away) and so is the sound quality.
Extras are 'ok'. I miss new interviews with the crew (there's some from when the film premiered), a 'where are they know' (yeah, we do know Alan Parker is one of the most respected directors, Irene Care had a music career...what about Lee Curreri and rest?
All in all, I think the DVD won't dissapoint to Fame fans that want to have the movie in digital quality.

Movie Review: great but disturbing in somse scenes
Summary: 4 Stars

I have children in the performing arts - and I wanted them to to get a taste of the "reality" of a full-time school and the harshness of competition in such schools. The movie was great for that - but some of the R-rated scenes were even hard on me. I do not know if I will watch the movie again soon. As a presentation of 'what it's like' to enter one of these firecely competitive schools, it was very good; and as a sober revealer of how much anger, disappointment and immorality there is in such a society, it was great. It was a much ROUGHER version of "STEP UP" (the movie). For parents considering putting their kids into performing arts high schools - it's probably informative, and not too far off. I would rate it PG-17 to R for language and sexual insinuations.

Movie Review: I'm going to live forever...
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this movie. I am a fan of all things "musical". But this is a classic and I am very excited for the remake - hopefully it will do it justice!!!
