Movie Review: A GREAT MOVIE
Summary: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It is like nothing I've ever seen before and the characters stay with you long after watching it.
The movie centers around a hitman and his unseen female partner, who plans everything for him. At the beginning of the movie he professes laziness and likes the fact that destiny is laid out for him as he is told what to do. By the end of the movie, we see a shift in this thinking but the arc was not easy to follow for this viewer. Maybe it got lost in the subtitles.
This was minor when compared to the movie as a whole. There are scenes that shine brilliantly: the main character completing a hit and then running into an old classmate, when we meet the mute's first love and watch his attempts at making closed businesses a 24 hour proposition. The camera work was fascinating. Most of the scenes take place at a frantic speed with poignant moments shot in black and white and slowed down. This film color washed the underbelly of Hong Kong with a human stroke.
I felt this movie portrayed the yearning for love which is understood by any audience so the appeal of this asian film is tremendous. If you are looking for something totally different and don't mind subtitles, this is the movie to see.
