Movie Reviews of Eyes Wide Shut [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Gran film Summary: 5 Stars
Movie Review: Kubrick strikes again. Summary: 5 Stars
Kubrick definitely doesn't disappoint in this one. I thought it was better than I expected since I wasn't really sure what to think with that cover and synopsis. All the great cinematography and strange themes you'd expect from Stanley are there. Definitely worth the buy, especially on Blu-ray.
Movie Review: great quality Summary: 5 Stars
beautiful clean transfer and great disc that shows the un-cut movie in its whole.
especially enjoyed the extras.
Movie Review: The movie looks just fine on blu ray Summary: 4 Stars
I'll limit my review to just the blu ray presentation rather than the movie itself, since both have been covered but some confusion remains about the high definition and the aspect ratio issues.
To start, some of the scenes in this movie will be grainy no matter what format you watch it on BY INTENT of the director. Kubrick made effective use of grainy shots to imply grit and confusion. So if your view of yourself as a new age cinephile is how sharp the picture is, then this movie will annoy you no matter what format you buy it in. It won't take advantage of 1080p in every scene. And that's completely OK from a creative perspective. If that will bug you (because some scenes will translate better on your HD screen) then go with DVD.
Now, as to the aspect ratio and transfer issues. I have read many of the reviews on here and comments across the web. And though Kubrick was burned by conversions from theatrical ratio to full screen home video ratio in the past (and thus filmed some of his movies in 4:3 full screen ratio to keep control over conversions), he did not PREFER his movies to be played in 4:3 ratio). He simply filmed with a 4:3 aspect while keeping a theatrical aspect in mind for the theatrical release. SO if you buy and play this blu ray version, you will not feel like content has been cut off on the top and bottom. Kubrick planned for both types of presentation as he composed, which may have weakened his final vision (especially now that home and theatre ratios are closer to each other), but you will still get his "original vision" when you watch this version.
Quick comment on the film: despite some fantastical serendipity of timing and the fact that the main characters are people of means, the theme of seeing a veil pulled off of the security and stability of your relationship is something that will likely hit home for many.
Movie Review: Very pleased. Summary: 4 Stars
Initially I sat down to watch this as a labor of love for Kubrick. I was told by many credible opinions that it was anywhere from "okay" to "awful", with the occasional "not bad" thrown in. But when I sat down and watched it myself, I realized all over again that there is a reason so many people followed Kubrick through the years: he is a master of mood.
And that is one thing I got from the movie. The other thing I enjoyed was the interplay between Kidman and Cruise, with their awkward marital problem, and Cruise trying to cope with it. It's a film that seems to question the nature of man and his emotions/desires. A rewarding watch.
