Movie Review: Why don't you go play with yourself ...
Summary: 5 Stars
EVIL UNDER THE SUN (1982) with the great Sir Peter Ustinov in the role of Poirot is certainly unmatched (though David Suchet's version is great in its own dreary way, vid. my review). Here, filmed in sunny Majorca Island, Spain, set off the coast of Albania, is the humorous, sunny and extremely detailed version we all love and know so well.
(My title is the hilarious line hissed by James Mason at poor Roddy McDowell.)
Filming on Palma de Majorca, director Guy Hamilton, while not matching the cinematic heights of Ustinov's previous outing in DEATH ON THE NILE (vid. my review), gives his own delicious take on the story. Somewhat like ice cream for the eyes, my wife drooled over the marvelous costumes/jewellery (she loves Art Nouveau and Bakelite). I, of course, drooled over the scenery and Poirot's wardrobe (but not his swimming attire).
The story of the murdered harpy Arlena Marshall (Diana Rigg) is cheerfully played out, and with the powerful likes of Dame Maggie Smith, James Mason, Roddy McDowall, Nicholas Clay, Colin Blakely and the rest, we have a fun, sunny murder that actually sweeps the evil under the sun right under the carpet. This story was meant to ooze evil, and the original old murder - which drove the reverend a bit nuts when he was reminded of it - was treated here as no more than a cast-off little event in Poirot's past.
Aside from that colossal slip, this classic is right up there with Albert Finney's MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. In fact, it is slightly lamented that Finney did not want to continue to do these "Ustinov" classics ... but then they wouldn't be Ustinov classics!
We owe Sir Peter Ustinov a great debt for carrying Poirot so marvelously until David Suchet could receive the mantle from him.
