Movie Reviews of Everything Is Illuminated

Movie Review: Excellent Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

A young Jewish-American man (Jonathan played by Elijah Wood) goes to the Ukraine to learn more about his grandfather who escaped the Nazis. He hires a young hip-hop loving Ukraine native and his curmudgeon grandfather to drive him around. All three find out more about themselves on this journey.

The first 40 minutes or so was very funny. The absurdity of living I guess. The young Ukrainian man seemed more American then the stuffy prematurely old Jonathan. Then it becomes somber when some hidden truths are revealed.

I really liked this movie. I liked it enough if I was visiting someone and wanted to see this movie I would watch it again.

Movie Review: Read the Book First
Summary: 5 Stars

A marvelously bittersweet (and certainly five star) film which gets under your skin and doesn't let go. I'm writing this review to say that if you enjoy reading, please buy the book and read it before experiencing the film. Choices must always be made in what to bring to the screen and what to leave out; good choices were made here. The film works incredibly well on its own. For those who might want to read the book as well, a couple of off-hand remarks near the beginning of the book give away a major plot point of whose importance we are not yet aware. Having already seen the film, it made the book much harder (and, sadly, less enjoyable) to read.

Movie Review: Quirky, Thoughful, Joyful
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie on a cable movie station and loved it so much I ordered it from Amazon. I have shown it to friends and family whose ages range from 25 to 82 and they all loved it. It has a quirky humor to it that is hilarious but can also be subtle. The theme involving how people who are so different at first glance may find common ground in unexpected ways is delightful. The sorrow and joy that imbues the film is an inspiration. The acting is excellent, as is the dialogue and story line. The scenery is also beautiful. Though it has some violent scenes they are tasteful and not overly graphic however it is not for very young children.

Movie Review: Marvelously Gentle
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a marvelously gentle but sincere look at the effects the Holocaust has today. Elijah Wood plays the role of a collector who is seeking to collect memories of his family that was lost in the Holocaust. His parents have died leaving him with no memories of the family before they came to the United States. All they did leave him was a locket that serves as the key to his search for family and memories.

The film is beautifully photographed, directed, and delicately acted. Elijah Wood's portrayal of the main character is often flat and unemotional which cinematically magnifies the vibrancy of the joie de vie of those around him.

Movie Review: EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED (DVD)
Summary: 5 Stars

LOVE THIS MOVIE, WE'VE WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. EACH TIME WE SEE IT WE CATCH SOMETHING WE MISSED AND IT "ILLUMINATES" THINGS WE QUESTIONED. MY INLAWS ARE FROM THE UKRAINE AND IT HAS EVOKED A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHAT THE CHARACTERS HAVE EXPERIENCED AND THE EXPERIENCES MY INLAWS HAD. i ALSO READ THE BOOK. IF YOU HAVEN'T, I RECOMMEND READING IT AFTER THE MOVIE. THE BOOK HAS ANOTHER STORY WITHIN THE STORY AND I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CONFUSING TO READ IT FIRST. BUT THE BOOK DID HELP ME COME TO SOME POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS AS TO SOME OF THE EVENTS OF THE MOVIE. A FUNNY, YET EMOTIONAL, THOUGHT PROVOKING MOVIE.
